Default Stock AI better than GWX?

Gentlemen,

I am now in April 1943... things are starting to get interesting. For about 9 months now I have been forced to attack convoys submerged because of increasing enemy radar coverage.
My tactic is to infiltrate the convoy diagonally in a 45 degree angle from the front (at periscope depth)... as recommended by many of my fellow U-Boot Kaleuns.
However enemy escorts never seem to be able to detect my presence, even if they come very close, in some cases less than 1000 meters. Granted, I do keep my bow or stern pointed at the nearest DE to keep a low profile... but at such a small distance shouldn't they detect me nonetheless?
I remember the first few months of plazing stock SH3, infiltrating convoys was harder, with escorts often pinging me from 1500 meters away while at PD during mz attempts to slip into the "Geleitzug".

Also I have only encountered enemy aircraft maybe three or 4 times during my entire carreer (!!?) I get alot of radar warnings but I never see any real action regarding aircraft.
I this all normal? It may seem strange that I'm complaining... but I doubt I'm that good. I just want to have a realistic gaming experience.
Is my GWX installation broken?

As far as I can tell I installed SH3 and GWX correctly: First SH3, then 1.4 patch then I immedialtely applied GWX and the 1.03 patch. Only then did I start the game for the first time.
Any ideas? Do I need to manually edit some AI config files?

cheers!

Welcome aboard young kaleun.

no its not normal

although there should be less aircraft at the beginning
of the war you should be encountering them more unless
your patrolling the antartic

as for the escorts its clearly not normal

GWX escorts have Clairvoyancy 2.0 built in
either your being enormously effective as a skipper
or something has gone wrong
the description of your escort behaviour sounds like the
reverse of your situation.

in every case GWX escorts are better tuned and
from hard experience this results in them being
perceptively more agressive to the player.

suggestions I would venture reinstall repatch
and then GWX of course.

but you may want to wait for some others to post
advice before going that deep

Hi!

Most of the time they actually detect me when I try to exit the convoy though... when I'm already at a reasonable depth.
And then all hell breaks loose, so the escorts must be doing something right.

A read somewhre that in real life the asdic only worked for targets deeper than 15 - 20 meters. Is this modelled in GWX like that?
