...at what range is a surfaced type VIIB U-Boat visible? It seems the brits are using god mode. Its 1939 and I'm running GWX 1.03.

this depends.
Depends mostly on Time of day and the speed of the sub, weather and sea state. Also it depends on what mods you are running. When moving at high speed your boat creates a large wake both around the bow and conning tower. As a general rule of thumb in SH3, if you are within visual range of the enemy they are in visual rang of you. Use caution in your speed any time you are within 8 KM of an enemy unit. Try to restrict that speed to less than 3- 5 knots in fair weather at night
