Tips on range estimation?

I just got SH4 working again and I started using manuel TDC. The one thing is I never get the range right. It seems that I put it right on the masts, but I check the attack map and it's never right. Sonar is not exactly the easiest to find ranges and I don't want to depend on sonar for range. How exactly do I accuratly measure range? Do I do it a little bit above or below the masts? or am I just missing the top of the masts?
