Default Help - Question

I have GWX, but I don't think this is a GWX issue. When I ground my boat, a VIIc, I always get damage. Even if I just settle to the sea floor at zero knots. I've read from sources like Eric Topp who grounded his boat alot and it doesn't look like he's boat didn't take any damage. Am I doing anything wrong.

Thanks.

I am just as new to the game as you are Chris, but I believe that anyimte you are anywhere in your u-boat that is out of water, you are going to take damage. This means beachers, reefs, and port walls.

I have had some success with grounding the boat on the sea floor. SH3 will not recognize the tactical advantage of doing this though so it is pointless.

the trick to grounding the boat and sustaining minimal damage is to slow the boat to an absolute stop about 20 meters above the sea floor.

once you are absolutely still, press the "D" key to order a dive.

the boat will slowly settle to the bottom. you may still suffer damage, but it will not be near as much as when you are moving, or closing on the sea floor at a higher sink rate.

I know your new, and you have read about how some skippers had success with this in real life... but i can assure you, SH3 was never programmed by Ubi to simulate any tactical advantage to practicing this tactic.

good luck out there!

I thought that you meant grounding the 'boot on a beach...like I have seen some pictues. I have never thought of anyone trying to do it on the sea floor.

Sounds like an interesting tactic.

i have used it a few times in SH3 with varied results... and every time it was used as an absolute last resort.

one rule new Kaleuns learn quickly here at subsim... "Stay out of shallow water". and a lot of people think shallow means 30 to 50 meters; dead wrong, shallow water means pretty much anything less than about 130 meters, deeper as the war progresses

Strangely enough, I found out BOTH of the topics listed in this post not five minutes ago. I was being chased by a DD..I went silent running and went to dive DEEP...well, forgot to check depth to bottom because at 16 meters, I was literally rock bottom. My 'boot was not too badly injured, but it came as a shock...and as we tried to recover, we were depth-charged to depth.

Bit of synchronicity going on here LOL. Last night I was hounded for 1 hour 50 minutes by three destroyers in 90 metres of water. I did the usual routine and was surviving but just wasn't loosing them at all.

So after I had amde a small turn I went to the seabed and they couln't locate me.

But as mentioned in an earlier post, I think I'll be doing this as a last resort.

Regarding this (sorry if I'm hijacking the thread!), do escorts ever expend all their depth charges or have they limitless quantities??

And is their perseverance ever affected by the convoy sailing away from them unguarded while they hunt you??

Seems to me the best rule of thumb is to avoid the shallows and try to slink away to deep water. Later in the war you will be shown no mercy!

this is the best way to do it, but problem is that dd will find you anyway because sh3 is not programed to lisen echo from the bottom. when dd starts to ping he dont hawe echo from bottom yust from you, sad i try it few times, for you it is better to slowly run away:hmm:

Thanks very much for the info. Wow, so SH3 doesn't care if you are grounded or not. Good to know. Just have to do my best in shallow water. Does SH4 let you use this tactic?

Thanks again.
