Some manly boasting -it's good for you!

Well, talk about finishing on a high. I'm in my porpoise on the way home (negative crazy sub destroying tc this time!) with one torp left when I come across 2 troop transpots and 2 destroyers. Going at one of those funny angles where you just can't catch them.

I thought what the hell, lets have a go anyway. Last boat in the convoy was a destroyer, very close behind one of the troop transports. Closest I could get was about 3500yrds. I'd usually never bother at this range but I was feeling lucky. Manual targeting of course. Now or never.

Torpedo in the water. It was in the water for what seemed like a life time. Then... torpedo impact!! I pop up the scope to get a visual, send a ping to check range. Anyway, with the angles, and the boats doing 15 kts turns out my torp travelled a whole 3.4nm before striking! Ok... so it wasn't the destroyer but the troop carrier a hundred yrds in front of it. Still, I was impressed.

Special thanks to WernerSobe for this one, his excellent sonar targeting tuturial has transformed my game. Here's a couple of shots to show my plot and the damage!

Mark 5 is where the torpedo impacted and the ruler shows the distance it travelled before wreaking havoc.

When time permits, there's no substitute for tracking a target over a set time to determine speed. I tracked for 15 mins, trying to focus on a single ship. Usually easier to pick out the lead or trailing ship with the sonar. My calcualtion gave me a speed of 14.8. I rounded this up to 15. Thinking about it, if I'd have put 14.8 into the TDC it would've probably picked out the right ship.

When I got an estimate using the periscope before firing I was given 19kts but reset it back to 15 and stuck to my guns so to speak.
