Default Tired of this

Like everything else that doesn't quite work, this yet another hereditary issue from SH3. This is not a roll of the boat; sometimes the bridge view gets "stuck" at this angle. Seems like I recall there was a way to fix it (or avoid it) - maybe it was related to using the external view? or the numberpad DEL function? - but maybe that's just my imagination. Can anybody recall it and refresh my memory? Thanks.

Never ceases to amaze me that the patches never fix stuff like this and yet we keep getting fed more eye candy in add-ons while the basics are still wanting. Sorry, don't mean to rant. Well maybe a little.

Wow, i havent seen that in ages. Try Leo's ROW camera mod. I havent seen this behaviior in awhile, and you'd really be doing yourself a disservice by not trying out his camera mod, its pretty cool.

I have never seen this even once in hundreds of hours of play.
I'm using un-modded stock game fully patched.

You should ask for fixes in a patch only if it happens with NO mods installed. If you change your game, then ask for fixes from the creators of the mods. Sorry, don't mean to rant. Well, maybe a little.

When you buy a car and change the hell out of it until there is nothing left from the original, you don't go to the manufacturer to fix the problems you have caused. And with a declared intention to rant.

Have you ever played Silent Hunter 3 or 4 (I mean, with no mods)?

Ducimus, I had not seen it in ages, either. Used to get it all the time with SH3, but it had not cropped up at all in hours and hours of playing SH4 until after I pressed the numberpad delete key to turn off the HUD for night vision using the ROW mod, and also for some screenshots. I guess it could be related to that keystroke. Odd as it may sound, that's the only new element I introduced into the gameplay routine.

I do have the camera mod (not enabled) and you're right - it IS cool. I really like it except that the mouse cursor movement is too slow for my liking. Understandable why this is so, since you have so much freedom with the view. I just haven't had time to mess around with the mouse settings to compensate for it.

Thanks!
Rob

[irrelevant stuff about cars]

Have you ever played Silent Hunter 3 or 4 (I mean, with no mods)?
Look, sir, I'll bet I can repeat this WITHOUT mods installed. It used to happen all the time to an unmodded SH3. And if you'll look around these forums before shooting off your keyboard at me, you'll find at least three threads where I've praised the forthcoming add-on pack.

Don't start talking to me like I don't know what. I HAVE played both games without mods. I've had SH4 since it came out. I pre-ordered it, in fact. And I only just modded it a week ago. Have YOU ever played either game WITH a mod?!

Now I AM ranting. The software industry in general (I do not mean you personally or your employer) puts out half-finished crap all the friggin' time. Dead-end elements (e.g., contact detonator, magnetic detonator), sloppy code, CTDs, etc. The real culprit, though, are we the players who are dumb enough to keep buying this pablum.

And the horse you rode in on.

[Edit - Read the GD credits for SH4 and look for DeepSix. I'm not the top of the heap by a long shot, and I have no right to brag about any big contribution, but I did spend a good bit of my time doing what I could to help make SH4 the game we all enjoy. Sent my share of PMs, by request, to one of your fellow devs. That's no big contribution, but the point is, I care about this and want it right. I would think you would want the same.... Over and out.]

Since we are on the subject of this particular stuck tilt to the view and I use the numpad period key often for full screen view and play the un-modded stock and patched game and have never had this stuck view, I strongly suspect it's related to mods, broken game, or a machine problem (performance, driver, card, memory, etc.) If it was a bonafied bug coded into the stock game, several of us should be experiencing it more than once. Since everyone knows how to determine if it's a mod causing it, then the discovery of a solution should be easy. It might be a little harder if you have some utility coded you use in other games or desktop application which uses the numpad to do something special you forgot about. Maybe a joystick button mapping.

when that happens to me it is usually easily fixed with just a quick zoom in and out with the binoculars.

What he said.....

It seems to be related to the angle the boat is at when you zoom in/out. Wait until you've a substantial list and then zoom and back and you find the 'view' is 'stuck' at the underlying angle at the time you zoomed. I fix it by zooming again when on an even keel.

My rig is pretty modern, so I find it hard to think that's responsible, however here are the specs:

AMD Athlon FX-62 dual core
Kingston 2GB KIT DDR2 667MHz PC5300
Gigabyte PCIe ATI RADEON X 1950 XTX 512Mb DDR4
WD Raptor 74GB SATA 10,000 RPM
Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum

I've run both in original and modded specs. The issue seems far more obvious in SH3, but then SH3 seems to have greater movement of the boat in the sea.

Cheers

p.s. with all due respect, maerean_m, were you to release a game not requiring extensive modding to make it acceptable, people wouldn't need it modded, would they? Nobody will play it unmodded as it is, to use your car analogy, rather like taking delivery of a vehicle and finding it has no tyres.
"Where are the tyres???"
"Oh, you'll have to download a mod for those....but the car can run on the rims, you know...."

Default STOP IT!

NO-ONE should rant here. This is the forum to bring your successes and your troubles.

I think we are all richer and our game play very much enhanced by having a forum and sharing our issues.

If you don't have a solution for some problem, move on. Don't jab verbally at a guy with a difficulty. That's like kicking a guy when he is down.

If you don't have something good to say...SHUT UP!

All right men, off we go on trail completely away from the topic. Get back on track.

As many hours that I have played both SH3/SH4 modded and vanilla, I can honestly say I have not had this issue with incorrect camera angle.

Default I second the motion

I have also played the game for several months in all manner of strange mod conditions and without mods and never seen this. It is amazing to me how someone will just go off catastrophizing about non-consequential issues.

It reminds me of the infamous rants about the periscope animations that are completely irrelevent to playing the game at all. Would it be nice to see periscopes moving up and down when we should be fighting the boat? Sure, I'll grant that is a good way to get killed enjoyably. But does it mean a thing to the process of hide, stalk, destroy? Not in the slightest.

A sense of proportion seems appropriate here. I just don't understand the hysterics. This is a little issue not worth spending time on when larger and consequential issues abound. This is a great game. I've spent a lot of time lately showing that the devs exercised due dilligence, making a game that despite popular opinion, reflects historical fact in many ways hotheads have deemed defective.

Determining historical fact is done by careful research of proper sources, sometimes weighing contradictory data to arrive at a reasonable solution. Approaching a problem with running the game is done by recounting exact configuration of hardware, software and game conditions that produce the problem, not yelling and ranting in SUBSIM like a puppy that just got his tail docked with a meat grinder.

I reloaded a save from a big storm. Tapped period key many times to enable-disable control panel. I/O on the binocs and scopes, TBT several times at various list positions. No joy making the game lock the view in tilt from the bridge. I've seen this using zoom views in SH3 if I changed the view while the zoom was tilted and got it sorted out by waiting for an even keel before changing view. Never had this problem in SH4.

Something to try is next time you have a tilt lock, tap one of the cursor keys briefly and then tap the main keyboard minus(-) "view to heading" key which should snap the view to straight forward and level with the boat.
