you have got renown in finishing your missions
Each time you finish a mission, it increase depending on the succes of your mission number of ship sunk, damage of your sub ....

Not so much the number of ships sunk, but the total tonnage of all the ships.
2 carriers is worth 12 small freighters.

And primary objectives completed. Keep signaling to the base after you finish them so they can get you new ones.

High tonnage kills and higher difficulty setting. These are the only 2 ways.

Generally, don't waste time with small vessels. Save your torps for larger ships.

And don't waste ammo on Sampans and Junks.
2 tons - 5 shots
5000 tons - around 30 well placed shots
