finishing them off

Last night i managed to hit a c3 with my last two eels driving my IIA sub. The ship came to a dead stop but didn't sink.

Normally i would RTB, leaving the ship where it is but since it is a kind of juicy one i started wondering if it is possible to finish ships off with the flak gun and if so how.

If it can be done how should you do it? Riddling the hull with bullets or shooting its deck cargo?

Thanks in advance!

Default shoot it!

You can use the Flak gun (will take a long time) or you could use the deck gun.

I usually attack single merchants (anything from coastal merchants to medium cargo's) with my deck gun if I have good weather and no escorts to worry about...but keep in mind that late in the war they started arming the bloody ships so deck gun attacks become a very risky chance.

If you are early in the war than you should be able to put two eels in a merchant and use the deck gun to finish it off...you can use the flak gun but it will take forever (always shoot at the stack and then below the water line)

What mods are you using?...GWX alters how well the deck gun works and changes the damage values...one or two eels will kill most merchants, it is just a matter of how long it takes for them to flood (could take hours)

I like using the deck gun against flower class corvettes also...just aim for the gun first and the clear the rest of the deck.

Hope this helps.

Or just stab them with the Cook's knife. Brag told me to carve out my initials on the Nelly. It said: N.D. was here i stabbed the bloddy thing with this knife.

IMO flaks are useless in this case-only deck but you don't have any, as was said before aim below water line

Hmm... C3... it means you are using vanilla SH3 and not GWX. Vanilla SH3 is mostly based on hit points. If the ship hasn't sunk yet then it won't sink later.

You can try shooting with the AA machine gun. This may accumulate hit points and you may have a very slim chance to sink it. Either the hull or the cargo won't matter, fires won't make a difference either.

On the other hand you could try GWX. With two spaced out torpedos a large merchant will have sunk from flooding within 30 minutes in most cases.

Next time, hit the c3 just infront of the smoke stack; they crack every time using vanilla... flack guns are better with small merchants.

Well...using Vanilla SH3... couldn't he just RAM the C3 and sink her?

you are in GWX?
I think targeting superstructure is totally useless, except for looking great.

If you want to sink a ship, you need to aim for the waterline or slightly below. But I have no idea what a puny 2cm can do for you (never tried, or had enough ammunition to be sure).

On a C2/C3 I aim for the forward cargo spaces to sink it or straight under the funnel to stop it.
If it suvives the first impact, (GWX means: wait for 30 minutes at least to make yourself an opinion) then go for the final kill with deck gun or a torpedo in the after cargo spaces... as you like... But remember that SINKING a ship in GWX takes time... (even if you just wait and don't spend more ammo, a ship can sink after HOURS, just by inflicted damage)

OR you can completely ignore that, back your sub up, and go forward at RAMMING SPEED, then batter the hell out of it (which is more fun).

Fun? But completely unrealistic. You might as well just use infinite ammo.

You might be surprised to hear this, but the jagged, inclined saw-thing on the bow was intended not only for cutting the anti-sub nets, but they were also intended for use in underwater ramming (ineffective, but the trick was occasionally used).

Not to challenge you, but can you provide some internet sources to show that? I've never heard that before...

Sure. You can ask a couple of the guys around here about it, too. They weren't very effective against the steel ships- of course- but they were used and bent on them, lol.
