Default Follow up to I got an old rig.....

I'm getting ready to order a new system.

After reading through a lot of the posts I'm still confused. Will SH4 run well on a Vista system?

Before you say just use XP, I also like FS X and I'm told it will look great with DX 10 (which requires Vista).

Can't 100% confirm but as far as I know, SH4 runs on DX9. DX9 runs no problems next to DX10 in Vista. I have Vista myself.

The reason you have heard "just go with XP" is because vista as an OS is quirky. Yes - DX10 gives you some extra visual "goodies" - but be warned that they come with a price. There is a reason that Microsoft extended the sales of XP - because even they see the flaws in Vista. Its not that the OS is horrible like WinME - but it can be a bear.....

But to answer the question - yes it will run on Vista.

It runs just fine on Vista.

You might also want to note that quite a lot of people who are slamming Vista will say something along the lines of 'that's why I haven't bought it', which indicates they either don't know what they are talking about cos they haven't actually got a copy of it, or they have a bent copy or an early beta, which is hardly the ultimate benchmark. So in either case, it makes many of such comments invalid. Vista is not perfect, but it's not the disaster many say it is either. I've run stock SH3, GWX SH3 and stock SH4 on Vista, and 1914 Shells of Fury (the XP German release version) and Dangerous Waters too, its runs them all without any problems whatsoever.

SH4 and FSX run very SOLID on my system, with Vista Home Premium (32-bit). I have at least fifteen games installed on my system right now, and all of them run without any problems, and all very smooth. That said, I am very judicious about keeping my HW drivers up to date, and I do NOT use virus software, under any circumstances. Plus, I use MSCONFIG to keep all the crap that likes to run in the background shut off. Usually, that's the first culprit for software conflicts. Bottom line, SH4 WILL run great on a Vista machine, and without issue. And BTW, I run SH4 with every graphic setting maxxed, at 1680x1050 resolution. I agree with everything Chock said above.

I've had trouble getting SH4 to work on Vista but I think it's a problem with my hardware. Driver incompatibilities etc. If you purchase a Vista system I seriously doubt you'll have problems. FSX was designed with Vista in mind but you won't get the most out of it unless you have a DX10 Video card (8000 series nVidia is my recommendation).

And--like it or not--Vista is here to stay so we all might as well start getting used to the idea (and I'm speaking to myself here more than anyone ). I'm running a dual-boot now but have trouble getting myself out of XP for my games...

There are some amzing deals on computers now! Make sure you get at least 2GB of RAM for a Vista box though. It's a resource hog .
