How can I view skin on a model in 3dmax and Wings3d?

I want to try skinning a U-boat and I want to view the skin on the model without loading SHIII. I figured out how to unpack .dat files and I can import and view the wireframe models in 3dMax and Wings3d. However, I am a complete newbee to 3d graphics programs (and this forum). I want to see the skins on the model, but I cannot figure our how to do it.

I searched the forum and found some treads requesting a simple viewer for displaying a model with a skin, but there does not seem to be one available.

Could someone walk me through how display a skinned model on 3dMax and Wings3d? Please remember that I am roadkill on the information superhighway.

Thanks. By the way, this is a great forum.

for Wings3D: first import your 3D model into Wings3D. Then click on file--> import image. Select the image you want displayed on your skin. Now click on window --> outliner. In the outliner window you'll find your object that you imported (the 3D model). Left click and hold on the image you just imported in the outliner window and drop it on top of the 3D model of the object you want skinned (this will be it's white box with the 'M' in it). A window will pop up asking you how you want this image to be applied to the 3D model. I always select diffuse. You'll have to click twice (you'll see what I mean when you do it). Voila. 3D model skinned.

It worked! Thanks. I have been trying to figure that out for the last two days.
