How do I effectively use my stern tubes to sink a target? I managed, barely, to sink an old composite freighter with my bow tubes, but only leaving 3 bow tube reloads. Being unable to effectively use my stern tubes pretty much takes away 1/3 of my primary weapons.

swing the boat round line em up and fire.
to date i've only ever killed Destroyers and a sub chaser with my stern tubes. mostly because i'm at p-depth on silent and they're depth chargine where they *think* i am. they never see it coming hehe. pete |

The stern torpedoes are used only when the bearing to the target is between 110 and 250 degrees.
Never use them when the target in front of the sub. You can switch to attack map to see what a weird trajectory they would follow. Quote:
That's why the Type XVIII uboat had only bow tubes and no stern tubes.

Targeting with the Stern Tubes at a Escort Vessel is seems like to be the Escort moves on a silver Tablet, because the Speed of the Boat subctracted from the Escort Speed. So you now have longer times for Aiming and tracking. Best Firing Distance is 800 to 500m. than the Escorts cannot evasive trhe torps. Or a Shot when the Escort comes frome Left or Right in nearly 90 degrees in the Stern Shot Axis at such distances.. then high hit probability no chance for the escort Ist´s a Sport for me to Hunt Destroyers. In One Convoy Battle 1 or 2 Destroyers goes to the Fishes. In SH3 yesterday i could sink, me angry making ,2 Flower Class Corvettes with shallow setted Torps. Corvettes are normally no Targets for me and noth worth a Torp. Greetings Moc |

Look about halfway down the page here and you'll see how a diagram of how real WW2 skipper brought his aft tubes to bear on a convoy

I use them alot when I find myself in the middle of a Convoy I will attack two ships. Fire my Bow off at one ship and quickly get a Solution on one crossing behind me and fire on it. The most effective way to use a boat anyway. After fireing all my fish its go deep and make myself a hole in the water. I will only attack a couple ships in a convoy then I will leave. I also use the rear tubes to knock off Destroyers. I get one to chace me then at about 1000 yards I let him have a shot head on. It has a way of messing up his day. Attacking Convoys from within has at alot of times lead to having a few misses turn out and hit another ship while I am in there. I have on several occations sunk more then one ship using the solution for one ship. Of course its never intended but just by chance a lucky shot.

I use my stern tube for the final coup de grace. If I have a vessel that is not sinking with the initial attack I will swing around the stern and send out a torpedo. Usually I have plenty of time to make the solution perfect as the vessel is either dead in the water or moving at a kt or two. Very rarily do I get a set up for my stern tubes for a initial attack.

Best way, be at the ideal firing position for a stern shot, facing away from the track 1000 yards away, when the target gets there.
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=124231 Little mini tutorial for that, uses a stern shot for the example. |

I use 'em about like Warhawk does; to finish off merchines I foolishly only put two bow torpedos into. Still not used to the smaller US warhead sizes....while I greatly prefer the USN's submarines to the Kriegsmarine's, a year or two on SH III has left me envious of the bigger kaboom the German fish pack.
Sometimes if you get inside a convoy, they're great for some all 'round destruction. If you use manual targetting (unlike me), just let 'em get within 400 yards. Solution? Bah! Who needs one? ![]() ![]()
