night hunting

does anyone have a procedure of identifying ships at night? gwx disables the auto identify, which i agree does add to the realism, but short of pushing my monitors brightnes all the way up (cheating a little eh?) i have no way of knowing the nationality of the contact im observing. is tracking the target until daylight the only way to do it properly.
secondly guys, ive wolfies tweek pack installed over gwx. i would like the time compression to cut to realtime if any ships are in my vicinity BUT also be able to increase time compression whilst submerged from depth charging etc, as ive found that after surviving a charge, it takes the escort an age to get back to its convoy, i think its the hunter and pray states in the tweek pack thats stopping me doing this, whats the best settings for these

Welcome to the war as experienced by the real u-boatmen (well, at least as far as night-identifying goes). Look harder!:rotfl:

Rule of thumb: if it's in a convoy, it's fair game.

Most neutrals I've seen had running lights on and search lights aimed at their flag.

If it's a darkened ship, and clearly trying to slip along in the night, it's likely fair game.

Oh, accept for those occasional German flagged ships traveling darkened (some other u-boat sank one of those off S. Norway when we were in the general area supporting the Norwegian campaign efforts, but it wasn't us - I swear - we was, err, somewheres else, yeah, yeah, that's it, we was somewheres else, wasn't us - I swear!).

The same as the positive renown you'd get paid if it was enemy. Unless you go into the files and change neutral renown to zero...or positive. It would be cheating to use that to poach on them alone, but in convoys they really did sink them, so...

I shoot anyone running dark. I have on occasion sunk a neutral ship, but hey, it's all part of the experience. Have a good remainder of the patrol and it won't really impact your career. You may, optionally, choose to shed a short tear for the poor neutral guy, but since he's probably French or American and you're eventually going to be hunting him with a license anyway, I wouldn't cry into my sauerkraut about it.

As Tommy would say: "Er, umm, casualties of war, you know, old bean, what, what, cheerio." Silly Tommy.

Also, sinking a neutral makes a nice story for the grandkids, except, of course, that I will be dead before 1944. So it isn't like a few black spots on my record tends to last very long anyway.

"When in doubt, torp it out!"

In 1940 Grid BE I saw some of the biggest juiciest tankers I have ever seen as they got closer I expected to see Exxon on the hull. My finger was hovering over the fire button.

No escorts at all!

I was running on the surface in broad daylight, turns out they were from Ireland ...where'd they get those supertankers? sheesh.

Anyways night or day careful what you shoot.

PS a year later saw the same exact convoy just west of Spain Grid CG .

Bah, you should have sunk them anyway!

Who cares if they're Irishmen? The Irish built some of the finest ships for the Brits. Make them all swim to Hell...:rotfl:

With experience you will be able to recognise the profiles of most ships, even in bad light. If you need to check the details of a ship, use the uzo or periscope if submerged for the recognition manual.

If they are French...Shoot them! Don't worry, no one will get mad except the French.
If nothing else, do it just for grinns...lol
