Default GWX install problem (copy protection)

Hey guys, after a pretty big break from SH3 and a short stint in SH4 (didn't like it) i'm trying to install SH3 on my new system.

Clean install SH3
install 1.4b (EU version)
Install GWX
Install GWX1.3

Start the game, enter CD key but it just freezes on the cd check.

I actually have 2 legit versions of SH3 so i completely un-installed and re-installed from my other CD, same story. I dl a different version of the 1.4b still no joy.

Any advice guys? I surely do miss cruising the atlantic in my uber boat of doom

Enter CD Key?

Never had to do that with mine.
It is printed on the DVD, but I've never been asked for it.

That's true. Vista will give you problems. I forgot about that one.I'm sure there's a thread here somewhere, detailing an installation with Vista, and if I recall correctly, it involves keeping the install out of the "program files" folder otherwise your update patches are cached and never applied. Then again, you seem to have GWX installed without any error messages being given, which indicates that the patches applied correctly.......so that leaves me kinda stumped.

With Vista, I had to install a driver update for StarForce - see

http://www.star-force.com/protection.phtml?c=83&id=957

And, yes, I think it is best to install anywhere BUT "program files" as it bypasses Vista's UAC. I have had issues with games patches where the patch, by all accounts, seems to install fine, but in fact really does not run as it is in the UAC imposed hidden AppData directory in the user's home directory (and the actual game binary needs to find it in the game's true install directory). The SHIV 1.3 patch behaved like this for me originally - it seemed to install properly, but the game still came up as v.1.0 - the patch had gone into (hidden) AppData, not the SHIV directory in "program files", and of course, SHIV is not VISTA UAC-aware.
