Default why is my passive sonar so good?

Hello,
thanks for the excellent forum and all the great threads. I've been lurking a while and have learned a lot from you guys.

I searched in vain for this topic but I would be surprised if it has not been discussed. I'd like some feedback about the performance of my subs passive sonar in Silent Hunter IV patch 1.3. I have the game running now, and am moving at flank speed, on the surface, in heavy seas. I would expect the sonar to be absolutely wiped out with all the ambient noise, but not so! I am somehow managing to track a convoy that is steaming along at slow speed many kilometers away.

Perhaps this is possible in a 688 boat but not surely not in a Gato!
What do you think?
(I have the realistic sensor setting enabled by the way)

(please by all means reply with pointers to relevant threads)

thanks again

There has been some discussion on this issue. The chin sonar could detect supersonic noise while the sub was surfaced. But, the sub had to be engines at slow or stopped. The ingame sonar while surfaced is a bit too good, yes.

ok, thanks. I suspect this behaviour is hardcoded and not fixable with a mod?

also, I'd like to make the ASW boats a bit more effective. I found a mod that seemed to be compatable with 1.2 but apparently not 1.3... Any ideas?

um, I know I am cramming a bunch of topics into this thread, but what the heck. Do you dudes have a recommendation for a modern modern sub sim? The last one I played was 688 a few years back.

thanks all,
FF

Go get Trigger Maru in the mod forums for better DD action.

I think some guys are fiddling with the sonar while surfaced. Not sure as other things are being addressed.

Last nuke boat game I had was 688. I'm a diesel boat man so I stick with WW2 subs.
