HMS Nelson, is there more than one?

Went on a patrol from my base in Wilhemshaven heading for DJ21 in mu trusty U53(July 1940), sank a couple of lone merchants en route but nothing too special, was about to order a little sun bathing time for the crew when a large enemy convoy is reported to be close by. I plotted intercept course and approached at periscope depth. Singled out a nice juicy large tanker and large merchant for a bit of special attention when the HMS Nelson suddenly gains recognition in the periscope, 36,000 tons for one ship, a little too good to pass over so fire a salvo of 4 torps at her but she continues to limp forward, persued her using the cover of a merchant to play hide and seek with the escorts until crew had reloaded and then fired 2 more torps into her from close range to finish her off. After a little difficulty evaded the escorts and completed mission, a little low on fuel for the return journey so called in at Vigo for a nice top up from the Bessel. Set course for Wilhelmshaven again once replenished, charting through known convoy routes. A little quiet for the first few days then suddenly reports of a large enemy convoy in our proximity, took me quite a while to get ahead of the convoy and get position for attack, but did so eventually, but imagine my surprise when after spotting many juicy targets once again, low and behold the HMS Nelson comes into my sights. Now forgive me if I am missing something here, but I am sure I sank that can to the depths of the Atlantic so how is there another one? Does anyone have an answer as I am puzzled, not puzzled enough to prevent me sending her to the bottom of the ocean again, only needed two torps this time, but puzzled all the same. evaded escorts and headed back on course but was rerouted to Lorient as new base, shall head there once out of torps or low on fuel whichever comes first. Any insight on this double sinking of HMS Nelson would be appreciated.

I remember playing stock SHIII, when it first shipped. There was at least one instance where I came across 3 Nelson-class BBs steaming in a row, escorted by about a half dozen destroyers and two Fiji class cruisers.

I could understand it if it said Nelson class, but is specifically said HMS Nelson, assume that was the name of the ship as it said HMS and not a certain class of ship as it usually does.

HMS Nelson and the HMS Rodney were the only ships of the class built. both were scrapped after WWII (england did not save one WWII Era battleship...what a shame)

In SHIV there are tons of Yamatos waiting to be sunk and in SH3 there are tons of Hoods, Nellys, Kings and all other ships waiting to be sunk. Thats why if i have no luck with merchants i head to Task Forces and sink some Cvs, BBs or the biggest target I can find and get away from the scene before the DDs come after me. I always come home with one ship sunk from now on. If i run out of fish i stuff Bernard in the tube and put some TNT on him and make him swin all the way to the target.

Thanks StarFox, that was my point. Only two ships of the class ever built, but numerous clones in the game seem to exist, even simultaneously.

Dammned shame that all the RN's BBs were scrapped even Vanguard which only completed just after the war IIRC. Problem was the country was bankrupt, BBs were obsolete and we needed the cash that all that steel could reach on the open market so bye bye BBs.

Apparently HMS Warspite didn't want to go to the breakers yard, managed to ground herself and refused to be refloated, so they broke her up in situ. Always thought that was a sad story, almost as if the old battle wagon was alive somehow.

It is rather a shame that not one piece of that era was saved. But the circumstances are understandable. I feel fortunate that here in my country, were were lucky enough to not have that worry and were able to save (and in fact, even continue to use) many of our battle ships for decades afer WWII.

HMS Warspite should have been saved if any battleship deserved to.

SMS Goeben was another ship that deserved to be saved. Almost 50 years in Active service, yet ended up scarped desipte being offered to the West German Government at a next to nothing price!

USS Enterprise....if any other US Navy ship was to be saved, that would be almost everyones first choice. she fought in almost every major battle during the whole war, from Pearl Harbor to Toyko Bay

Yes the big E should have been saved. There was, at the time, a lot of public upset at the decision to have her scrapped IIRC. There were some vessels saved from the wartime RN most notably HMS Belfast which is now a museum ship (run by the Imperial War museum) on the Thames in London. Apart from that there is a destroyer and a frigate still extant AFAIK. The frigate is currently owned by Egypt, plans are afoot to purchase her for the nation.

But overal considering Britain's naval past its not much to have survived.

BTW Belfast is execellent and well worth a visit if any of you ever plan on going to London.

Going back to the original topic, a similar thing has happened to me in my latest career. In one patrol I sunk HMS Rodney amongst a convoy of merchants and escorts. In a subsequent patrol I engaged another convoy to find HMS Rodney once again. The difference this time was that she was the only escort for the whole convoy. Needless to say, I sunk her and went on to annilate most of the convoy. My best patrol yet with 136,888 GRT to my credit.
