Default RO calls out contacts?

Hey everyone,
Does the Radio Operator call out contacts that appear on the active radar scope? If so, how do you get him to do it?

I played through one patrol with the 1st FuMO upgrade and he didnt call them out. This may be such that it is important to keep it off and only use it when necessary, forcing you to take control of the radar scope itself.

I found it difficult to determine bearing to target, because of the actual bearing wheel. Is there anyway around this?

Also, which position of the switches is the short range and long range? Im assuming that to the left is the short range and right is long range. And what to the numbers mean in the scope? I think its range; the right one goes up to 150, but I dont know the range of the value(in meters).

Does the radar have a blind spot, it must have because of the physical placement of FuMO on the conning tower? If it does, what is the blind spot?

Thank you and any help is very much appreciated!

PS. I found out that playing GWX1.3 loaded via SH3 Commander that using the RO icon at the bottom of the screen to turn off the radar works. In the user community manual, it says to beware doing this. Must have been fixed since then.
