Default Realism Delima

I am having a delima right now with regards to the realism level I play at. I am presently using GWX and have the realism at 100% (but with the map updates on). Basically I find it too easy (granted I am only in the tail end of 1940) but I can basically throw away my recognition manual and stadimeter because all I have to do is connect the dots on the Nav map to get position, course and speed. Unfortunately removing the map updates makes things a bit on the dicey side (especially when being prosecuted by a DD) and very difficult to get situational awareness).

It is almost as if it would be better if you were just presented with a broad square and know that the contact could be anywhere within that square (sort of like dangerous waters).

I was just curious if anyone else felt that same way and what "compromise" they struck to help them feel like they were not cheating. I am actually considering turning off map updates and allowing the external camera....this way I can still get a decent hold on situational awareness when needed but still have to do all of the hard work to determine range, AOB, etc.

Play it the way you feel most comfortable. Cheating in a solitaire game is an objective principle.

LOL! I normally never have the realism set above 51% myself. I'm a product of the modern US Navy. As an ex-Fire Controlman I've gotten too use to computers and ships gyro's to provide all the critical information and solutions. Not to mention that I was on AAW platforms, so shooting down air craft from many miles away with missiles is a LOT easier than trying to sink ships with torpedos using your eyeballs and a protractor!!

Then again, there is something about wanting to do it the "Real" way that appeals to me. I think it's time I put my old butt back at the Training Command and learn how to do this the hard way. Takes me back to my "A" school days when we were learning how to do fire control solutions using trig.

I've not gotten past 1942, so I've a long ways to go. Things like Real Life and other places that I hang out (Like MOUL on Game Tap) suck up some of my time, so my crew ends up with a lot of liberty while stuck in port! :rotfl:

I figure once I've gotten through to the end of the war, I'll start again, only this time with things a lot more real!

There is no dilemma. Just turn off map contact updates

Turn off map contact updates. Trust me. Please. Do yourself a favour. The game's all about plotting expected positions, estimating by eye, guessing, being wrong, being partially wrong, and sometimes being dead on balls accurate. The hell with comfort. Go big (all man targ, no map updates, no ext. cam) and you'll thank us (eventually).

Correction - i use stabilize view. Otherwise, the stad is kinda useless - past my frustration threshold.

I think I am going to head in this direction. Since GWX I have found evasion from escorts pretty "nerve racking" without the sonar bearing lines. The stock wasn't a big deal because it was a piece of cake. I might trade map contacts for external camera on the next patrol just to help with the situational awareness (at least I would still have to do all the plotting, ranging, etc)

I go with Joe and Keelbuster. All the realism settings. Sometimes I turn on theexternal view for screenshots only.
