ok it took me 6 or 8 Mk27s to sink a medium composite frieghter about 3900 tons. i even uped the impulse in the mini tweaker to 8500. now it sould only take 2 at the most to sink somithn like that right? and they dont seem to be tracking either

Don't know 'bout the 27's but the 14's, 1 just behind the stack an the other under one of the mast an most of the time it's sink it. Ounce in a while just one torp behind the last stack MAY split the ship in 2.

Most ships have a "Sweet Spot" where one or two torps will kill them.
It's worth finding these and practicing with the gyro angle on the TDC to hit these spots. .

The Mark 27 is a small homing torpedo designed to blow off an escort's propellor. It wasn't an anti-merchant shipping weapon. It carried only 95 pounds of Torpex, compared to the Mark 14's 643. |

Using Mk.27 to kill merchants... you may be fired by Nimitz by this. Definitely a waste of expensive anti-escort (DD) torpedo
They are designed to blow up the DD's propellor, sonar, rudder or similiar apperatus. Since they are small, they simply contain much less explosive. So they arn't great anti-ship weapons. They are used solely as a last resort, relying on their stopping power to put a termination on the DD attack run Next time, save yourself some renown (I know using renown to buy torpedoes is ridiculous), use cheap Mark.14s. That's what a successful submariner does! p.s. you should NEVER bring 7 Mk. 27 (Fido) for patrol. You should only bring 1~2 of them. For me, 3 is maximum limit. Also, please load them at stern tubes, as those DD attack runs usually comes from your stern side.

It's a reverse on the old saying... ie don't bother trying to crack a rock with a nutcracker. use the heaping great 12lb sledgehammer!
Just to give you an idea of the complete inappropriateness of using the Mk27 on merchies compare the warhead size of the two torpedoes. Mk27 = 95lb torpex Mk14 = 643lb torpex ![]() In fact the Cutie only weighs slightly more IN TOTAL than the warhead on the Mk14.

As others have suggested, use the specialty torps for their intended purpose.
I can take down a heavy merchie with one or two Mk14s if you hit them right or put in a spread. It would seem placing two torps on the same spot would punch a hole straight through, but the game favors the loss of two or more comparments over extensive damage in one compartment. Hitting under the keel adds significantly more damage. -Pv- |

I use the magnetic exploders and get two right under the stacks depending on the ship class they'll snap in half sink like a rock.
