Battleships
It seems like there a differant sim for every differant type of ship what is next Troop Transports Guardians of the sea the way things are going I wouldn't be surprised if some crap like that came out The one ship they havn't made a sim out of is Battlewagons. In my opinion Battleships are the coolest ship/boat except subs why can't they make a game like that with BB's

Shoot you can run entire MMORPGs around one WWII Era Battleship . . . with crew sizes in the high hundreds, some more then a thousand.
But, yah, there haven't been many sims involving the battleship . . .

There was a Naval Sim in the 80's or early 90's whose name I can't remember, think it was something like "task Force" it used Battleships.

I agree there isn't much on Battleships Sims these days. Too much focus on aircraft, subs and other theaters of war. I have nothing against aircraft or sub sims, because I have some of these myself like Silent Hunter, Wolfpack, Aces of the Deep, Steel Tide, Battles of Europe, Battle of Britain, etc. I enjoy these games, but every now and then I wish some company could come up with a tribute sims to The German Surface Raiders of World War 2. Ships like the Graf Spee, Bismarck, Tirpitz and then the other disguised merchant ships like Atlantis, Kormoran, Penguin.
Using the same idea as Silent Hunter series, allow the player to take command of these ships and sail the oceans of the worlds in search of prey. If an encounter takes place between ships of the British Navy, all the more interesting for a great naval battle. Battlestations Midway gives some consideration in commanding a battleship. You can feel the awesome power and heavy weight in the movement of the ships like Yamato, New Jersey. There were several naval games that came out back in the early 1990's. Although, they were DOS games, they had some good qualities and playabilities. I still have some of them. These are Stategic Simulation's Great Naval Battles Series. The better of the 5 was the first one, Great Naval Battles - North Atlantic 1939 - 1943. This game had all the battles that were fought between the British and German Navies. From the River Plate, to battles off Norway, Bismarck, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. You could play either side, switch from ship to another and issue commands along with a smoke screen to hide in. It was a great little game. Fighting Steel was an update of the Great Naval Battles with more detail and improved graphics. Windows 95 format. The game gives you command of British, German, American and Japanese navies. You can play either side, switch from one unit to another. Issue orders to individual ships to attack the enemy force. There are historical battles, like the River Plate, Hood/Bismarck encounter. Campaigns which shows you a list of what ships are available for the time period, which ones are under construction, before you take command. Between Great Naval Battles Series and Task Force 1942, Fighting Steel has elements of both those games. I still play the game for the enjoyment of watching the ships sailing into action with guns firing and watching the shell splashes rising around the ships. They don't make battlership games like these anymore. So hold on to the old naval games. Here is the link to upgrade Fighting Steel to its latest version, plus additional scenerios http://forums.navalwarfare.org/showthread.php?t=34 Microprose Task Force 1942. Was similar to Great Naval Battles. This involved the battles around Guadalcanal. It had some good moments in commanding squadrons of ships from destroyers , cruisers to battleships. You could issue commands to other units or switch from one to the other. The night battles were interesting to play, with star shells lighting up the enemy. Graphics were not like Great Naval Battles, but it still was an enjoyable game to play, I found these 3 were the better of naval games at the time. Battlestations Midway has scenerios in it which reminds of the John Wayne movie, IN HARMS WAY. The final battle at the end, shows PT Boats, cruisers and destroyers fighting to stop the might of the Japanese Navy, YAMATO, along with her escorts of cruisers and destroyers is an attempt to run this narrow gap to disrupt the American landings. Battlestations Midway is an enjoyable game and may be a little short on gameplay, but it carries some of that feeling that the old DOS games had, the feeling of overall command of your units. And it puts you into the heart of a naval battle. There is always room for improvement. ![]() Last edited by Julian; 09-18-07 at 06:08 PM. |
