Heading South out of the Celebes, My Soundman picks up a contact, wich is closing in on my position. By the way, is it accurate that passive sonar works while surfaced? Anyway, the contact is getting closer, only now it is obvious that there is more than one!
I determined the general course, and steer to intercept. Soon, I could see several Destroyers, and a Mogami Cruiser. But that's not all! Behind them is an entire convoy of merchant ships! Befor I could start licking my chops, I get spotted by one of the Destroyers, and he makes a bee line for me at high speed. I managed to stave off the following depth charge attack, and am now trailing the fleet! I hope to outflank them and reposition for attack befor dawn! God I love this game!!! |

If the task force is escorting that convoy....call it in and definitly go for it. Otherwise you may have run into a fluke 2 convoys. If it is two convoys, I doubt you'll be able to catch the task force. They drive pretty fast and tailing them, coordinating an attack and setting up distance can take in-game days. If it IS guarding the convoy...then find the biggest ship in the convoy (merchants) and find its speed in your manual. The convoy won't ever travel faster than that.

If it's an invasion force (say early 1942) then they have to let all those troops out someplace...

No it is not 'accurate' that sonar works while surfaced.
It could be done but it was highly degraded due to background noise. Not the rock solid plots we get now. Reminds me of that scene in Up Periscope.... "Sir someone just dropped 40 cents". "Are you sure ?", "Oh yes sir a dime a quarter and a nickle ![]() |

Speaking of Accuracy
That movie was "Down Periscope" with Kelsey Grammer. The movie "Up Periscope" was a WW2 movie (1959) with James Garner and Edmond O' Brien... JIM
