Default Mark Ten Torpedoes

Hello, I started a campaign with an old S-boat, figuring I'll upgrade to Gato when it comes along. Until then, I could enjoy some nice, reliable torpedoes.

Initially, I had some great success, but then I missed two shots, one at a small transport and another at a light cruiser. I was sure these were perfect solutions, and I kept my depth settings low, but neither salvo hit. Being suspecious, I did a test, and found my MkX torpedoes were running deep! Even on the minimum depth settings, they can only seem to hit larger ships with deep keels.

I am using RFB 1.31. Is this a bug in the game or mod?

Mk10 torpedos ran ~4 feet deep in RL. Are they running a lot deper than that in RFB (which uses CCIP's hardocre torp mod)?

Yes, they are running maybe 20 feet deep or so. I set the depth to the minimum, ~3.5 feet but several still ran under a light cruiser in my test.

Which year are you in because there were a lot of problems with the mk 10 in the early stages of the war.

You are thinking of the MkXIVs. The MkXs were older WWI torpedoes on only the S-boats, and they were fairly reliable.

While true do they actually 'improve' in the game in later years ?

RFB uses CCIPs hardcore dud torpedo mod, and they do improve I believe.

Mark 10s ALSO had problems. Compared tot he abysmal performance of the Mark 14, they seemed wonderful, but objectively they were also pretty crappy.

It's kind of hard to tell since the pig boats put in such a horrible showing of themselves. maybe it was bad torps, maybe they just couldn't shoot straight (not surprising for any boats that actually attacked using official USN doctrine (deep submerged attack on sound alone)).

When looking at the files which were originally tweaked by CCIP - the torpedo files (I'm at work now, believe it's the us-torpedo.dat/sim) the value for variable depth is 20. Maybe CCIP believed this were feet, I believe they are meters. Changing this value to 1.5 did make the Mk10 run 4 ft deeper instead and one can even hit shallow targets with it.

Can't answer that because I haven't gone through the whole war using just stock SH4. I started using mods as soon as they came out.

How does one go about changing the torpedo file? When I changed the .dat and .sim files to .txt for editing, all I got was gibberish.

You really should release this as an update to CCIP's work.

I agree. It was very much beta as he suggested. I thought jace or someone actually made a version (linked in CCIP's thread) with some other change...
