Default Nav Map: Setting Protractor Angle

This seems very basic, but I can't seem to figure it out. Stock SHIII, patched to 1.4b. I'm trying to work out an interception course to a contact. It's heading North, and I need to draw a line from the contact straight North. I notice that the map tools seem...deficient. How can I draw a line at a specified angle? Am I supposed to just eyeball it?

Click on the questionmark on the top right side of the toolbar (must be yelloy).
If you now choose the protractor or ruler tool you should see a compassrose on your pointer. click to get 1st point now make a line to the north the compassrose should tell you you are making a straight line if you see the line pass trhough 0 degrees.
