Well its quite frustrating when you see surface ships defend against planes in SHIV... look at videos from WWII (for example youtube): the sky is black with smoke from AA-shells, fire and smoke everywhere... and SHIV?
Well once I've seen a small puff-cloud from a shell... but you gotta be lucky to see one... so they are ingame, but why don't they always appear when ships fire at planes? The sky is too empty and clean when ships are fending off planes... there should be much more action. Is there any way found yet to improve the situation? Any way to increase the smoke-clouds from AA-shells, to make the sky around ships appear more dangerous for planes? Or is it, that the explosions only appear when a plane is hit by a flak-shell... so that it's basically no timed fuse like in reality but a proximity-shell? (maybe the missing proximity-detonator from our torps?) |

Yup I agree.. Wweird also how I dont get those puffs of smoke with the 40mm AA or the 5" deck gun using AA ammo, I guess it just aint implemented..

I was all upset when there were No flak shells for the 40 mm, but I did some research and found that the US did not use flak shells like the ones we got liked in SH3, seems like a good modder could figure out a way to do that for those of us who are not total realist. HINT, Please HINT

The puffs of smoke you see in those old film clips are from the proximity or timed shells fired by 5" AA guns, something subs didn't have. The shells were designed to explode close to the aircraft. 40mm and 20mm used shell which would explode on contact, but not in the air; hence those smoke puffs would only be seen when dual-purpose 5" guns were in action. Having them on the subs would be totally unrealistic.

I know and I did not mean the submarine AA defense... I mean the defense of battleships... just for fun:
create a small mission with the editor with just your sub (submerged), a battleship and attackplanes (divebombers)... and then start... you will see nothing that is more boring in the game... if the ship has novice skill you will only see the guns fire but nothing else... thats what I mean |

Well, the AAA is the least of the problems in the way air combat is modeled. OTOH, I suppose a TF throwing up clouds of flak puffs might obscure the actual air attack---which would be a good thing, you won't see the UFO aerodynamics of the planes as easily
