Re-skinning a model

I'm new at this but I'd like to paint up some ships from existing models for a new navy I'm building in DW. I also know nothing about modding.

I've re-skinned models in other games simply using photoshop on the files (they were made to be messed with anyway) and I was wondering what the procedure is to reskin a ship in DW to make a new ship for a new navy.

Are there any good modding tutorials about this ? I've looked around and havn't found anything on re-skinning. (I have the database editing and creating the new navy down pat)
