I'm thinking of starting a career out of Norway and hunting the Arctic convoys and possibly some Soviet ports. Is there any difference in hunting there, i.e. worse worth, more frequent single ships or warships, poorly-guarded ports, etc?

I was up there close to Murmansk (raided the harbor first).
Summer '44...when leaving the harbor, I found a huge US convoy, complete with escort-carrier! Most cargos were medium to large. ![]() I guess these convoys will be on a regular base, in that period. Murmansk is poorly guided...maybe a tugboat, or an armed trawler. You may sink a few DD's, and some medium merchants in the harbor. Btw, prepare for only a few meters underneath, when going for Murmansk! It's around 20m, all the way to the harbor itself. All this was in a typeXXI career. ![]()

Do you have GWX? If so then yes it is. There are frequent TF's and the thinly guarded Murmansk and Archanglesk convoys to be had!

Absolutely! During the summer hunt farther north that's where the convoy routes are. (Check your map) During the winter hunt closer to the coastline because the main convoy route shifts (presumably because of pack ice).
Fighting the Soviets up in those arctic waters is awesome. I loved it when I was up there and look forward to going back. Two ideologically opposed enemies with no quarter given. Man, it doesn't get any better than that....

Sounds exciting - guess it's time to man up my VIIC and pull away from the pier!

Was there in 42/43 and haven't encountered anything... later was sunk near Iceland so haven't tried much. But loooong daylight times or permanent night during winter is something interesting for sure.

If you pop up there during the norwegian campaign its a very good hunting ground for capital ships. I sunk an Illustrious class fleet carrier, and almost sunk a revenge class BB but got the speed wrong and missed it. Dont know about later in the war, but the bad weather should help you get away from those pesky DD's.

I've tried to hunt between Fjords and Bear Isl, nothing, no contacts (great visibility), no sound contacts also, went to Murmansk and also nothing interesting. Sunk 2 anchored warships and got back home after 1,5 month... Near Bear Isl there was not a single plane which were very annoying few hundred km earlier... NOTHING.
The route around Iceland - spotted something out there. Check huge convoys to/from Reykjavik. |

ya iceland has many convoys around it but the weather there is bad for attacking well. At least for me.

I was watching a show the other night (Discovery or History Ch) about the history and current wreckage location of the Schornhorst.
Inspired me to want to investigate that area as well... ![]() |

my current patrol is up in the arctic in January 42. Attacked two big convoys so far. All north of Norway. Bad weather but kinda cool place to check out.
