Is this the SD radar scope?

As the SD radar is in the control room and WernerSobe has said it was "just a bulb," I was wondering, is this the SD radar scope? It's in the back corner across from the "christmas tree" panel:

I remember seeing that exact same texture on the 'lens' part of the periscopes in the conning tower, back when the periscope animations were working.

That is an image of a camera lens (presumably taken out doors).

Interesting...

That link you provided says this:

Long-wave aircraft warning sets. SD-a, SD-1, and SD-2 are installed on submarines and give range only. SD-3, for small auxiliaries, supplies range and bearing. All sets are equipped with "A" scopes, and have provisions for IFF (identification) connections.

And that has always been my understanding. SD uses an A scope.

Now I know that early SJ used an A scope as well, but more familiar (in connection with SJ) is the PPI introduced in '43 I think.

That's why I associated the A scope in SH4 with SD and the PPI with SJ. There is no reason that I know of to run both displays simultaneoulsy for any one system... ie, it makes no sense to say both the A scope and PPI are for the SJ.

And that leads me to believe the current SD implementation (system is always on, no display - just a text type contact report) is a last second hack job and not a real "as intended" fix.

Thoughts?

JD

When the SJ-1/a with PPI arrived, the A-scope was still used to get a more precise idea on "what's out there". The PPI makes it sometimes hard to distinguish between multiple blobs/targets.

In the meantime, the SD was generally moved to the Command Room.
