Default 1.3 Sonar

I have not seen much talk on the sonar. Currently it detects while surfaced. This was apparently possible. I read of this in Take Her Deep. There was sonar on the chin of the sub and of course the sonar on the deck. Seems to be just a bit too good!!! At any rate, I wonder if background noises can be modded in? Perhaps making it some what more difficult to distinquish props.

there is a descussion in mod forum

its not realistic indeed. according to fleettype submarine manual the hydrophones below the keel were only able to catch supersonic sounds. So they are not capable for catching contacts. They are much more to catch pingings and identifieng targets.

obviously you can catch contacts with supersonic listening only, but not at that range. Supersonic sound does not travel so far so you might hear a ship from maybe 2000 yards but not from 20 miles.

According to Dick O'Kane in Clear the Bridge that's not actually correct. He used to have Tang lie to on the surface and use sonar to detect things. Was able to detect even submerged submarines before they reached a firing point - he proved this in some training pre-patrol.

It is inaccurate do detect things while surfaced with any kind of headway - O'Kane used to manoeuvre using the batteries under such conditions.

Yes, Take Her Deep stated much the same. Can hear on the surface but at very slow turns on the motors and very low kts. Even so, this sonar seems just a bit too good when at speed on the surface.
