Sudden Death

Greetings,
I have been playing SHIII GWX for about 6 months, but I just experienced something in-game that I cannot explain or get around, so I'm asking for help.

In game I have just snuck away successfully from a convoy I attacked - sinking one Buckley excort, one large tanker and two victory cargo ships. The date is May 1944 and I am in a TypeIXD.

The problem is that as soon as I surface 2/3's of the crew die instantly.

The hull integrity is 87%, the damage came from a Catalina in the Bay of Biscay earlier in the mission. I suffered no damage during the convoy attack and the CO is <2 on the meter. I have reloaded and tried surfacing at TC=1 with an external view - no rogue aircraft are there, but the crew still drinks the kool-aid.

Is it a glitch or were they all just waiting to die of old age?

Welcome to Subsim.

Yes, I'm affraid you have come across the IX/3 Conning Tower Bug. No matter how many crew members you put up there, they will all die. This only occurs after you take direct damage to the conning tower.

However, do not dispair, there is a fix being included in a not so distant release. Have I said too much?

For now, I would suggest swapping tower types, back to the IX/2 version.

Na, he won't under estimate the power of the dark side of the force. Besides, Vader still answers to the Emperor!:rotfl::rotfl:

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

such types of wierd posts you can see all over the forum, dailybayonet.

as for the bug... be sure no one is on the bridge when under attack (put them on the deck gun or flaks)

remove the repair crew untill only the first 2 are there (no officers included)
then order the repair crew to do some repairs on the bridge

this will help till (like Dan said) the not so distant release comes out (no im not an GWX team member, just waiting for it to)

Its a common bug with type IX subs, let me guess, you are using sturm 3?
It just causes anyone who isnt working to climb into the conning tower to die for no aparent reason. As far as i know there is no fix for it.

Wow.

You guys don't waste time with replies. Thanks for the help, I guess it is back to port for a refit for me then.

I just lost my CE, I sent him into the repair station - now he's dead too. I don't have enough crew left to sail home, the engine room is packed with corpses and I can't re-assign them zombie-style.

I'll have to restart the mission over, I hate to lose a promising career to a glitch, yet I also hate to forgo over three weeks and 60,000 tons of hard-fought battles.

Time for a little experiment in 'how deep will this thing go before it pops' and a restart.

Well that sucks

Can't you do "return to base" in the menu that comes up when pressing ESC?
(If you have a real high realism level, that option is not available)

Anyway welcome to the forum. Don't let the bug upset you.

Thanks for the welcome. I don't want to hit the RTB option, I am starting this mission mid-ocean from a milk-cow refuelling sub, and am looking to go sniping off the US east coast.

Be assured that in no way will this bug stop me enjoying the game -I'm used to many glitches, and have experienced the full fun and frustration that Ubisoft games can give.

I'm waiting to see what the overall feedback is on SHIV before buying it. GWX is so good that I don't want to return to a stock game with no harbor traffic and little else going on...

For me, it's a minor bug. I don't do the kind of raids that Herr Mohr does, so In general I don't get my conning tower damaged. If you play the same way, you might even forget about that bug.
Of course, it would be very nice if this is fixed in GWX 1.04
