Default Gonna try the IX boats

I am a big fan of the type VII and type II boats, but want to try a type IX now. I am excited to see how many ships I can sink with so many torpedoes. What is a good time to start a career with an IXB or IXC? I am interested in some arctic patrols. Is there many Brit or American convoys up by Iceland? What about the SOviets? THanks for any info.

PS. If anyone could also reccomend a nice skin for an IXB that would be great too

very nice skins STEED. I think it will be a toss-up between your black IXB skin and Fubars rusty IXB skin.

things are going not bad so far. First patrol with the U-64 type IXB in Febuary 41. Grid AK88 is the patrol grid. On route came across two lone tankers. Sunk one with a eel on a magnetic fuse and blew it in two. The second with the deck gun. Only about 10 shots and the tanker went up. Found a massive convoy just north of my patrol zone. Made an attempt during the day to make a run. Spotted by starboard escort. Spent 2 hours at 160m getting depth charged by 3 DD's. No damage though. Once the convoy passed surfaced to find night and made another run at the convoy. Came across them at the most perfect angle for an attack run. Just as I was going to periscope depth a flower corvette spotted me. How maddening. Spent another 2 hours getting DC'ed. Convoy had passed me by when I was making my way to the surface but picked up a faint contact far to the west. Flank speed and I came across a wounder medium tanker. It was on fire and doing 1kt. A torp into the starboard and the vessel went down. Now heading flank speed to catch up with that convoy!

So far I like the range and the fact that i still have 20 eels left. Yeah she is a pig to drive but i like it so far

If I were you I'd attack it on the surface and then run out of there on the surface at flank to reload then come back later.

surface attack! Interesting strat. The big IX boats seem fast on the surface so perhaps that will work.

do you just steam in full bore and fire of your eels and boogey out? do you worry much about the escorts or just go balls to the wall? sounds fun!

i only sailed in the type II and VII before i had SH3commander...
but as soon i could i took the IXB and hoped it was U-124...
i have read a book about it once... and ever since that day im addicted to U-124.
this book gave me also good information and tactics to use

then the time arrived that i had SH3commander and the type II and VII were forgotten

but if it makes feel you more gutsy or powerfull ? :hmm: to be honnest... i have no idea.
