rescue?

hello i have a question in silent hunter IV when i came across an american plane survivor i highlited him on my binoculars and the lifering button was still grey, do i have to be right next to him to rescue him?

You have to be pretty close for the lifering to light up. Also make sure it is one of our guys. I was doing some Lifeguard duty and at one point was surrounded by Japanese and US pilots... it got pretty hard to tell who was who!
