Default Question about type IX subs

Hi Guys

I have been playing SH3 with different mods for two years now but only a few months ago I concetrated on longer patrols with type IX subs.
My question is what would be the point to upgrade from IXb to later versions? I mean in game of course I know the historical data. In SH3 I see that besides slight difference and of course extended range (which in GWX is made less important by introducing supply ships) I see that there are no things that could convince me to do so.
I mean dive times are worse and worse, speeds as well - is there anything I am missing? Please share your information and feel free to shout at me if you feel like

Now back to work (for a change)

I'm in Mar 41 now and just upgraded to a IXB from a VIIB. Did it for the extra torpedos. Will probably not upgrade any further.

Range would be the point. The IXC for example, off the top of my head carried an extra 40 tons of fuel or something... compared to the IXB. The IXC/40 was another expansion on the IXC and had more fuel again, and then you get to the IXD and they had the capacity for ranges similar to the US subs.

Yep, I read that the IXB had a range of ~10k kilometers where the IXD2 has one of ~30k kilometers. Maximum diving depth could also be a point and I think the later versions had improved AA armament (if this isn't already included in an upgrade for the IXB).

The IXB still has access to the improved conning tower structures. So it can have the same sort of air defences as a IXC or C/40 could have.

Dive times are a factor as well, the IXB is the quickest diver of the IX range.

And also the IXD2 got a slightly higher surfaced speed (~1kn) AND some of them got things like these:
