Default IIA

So I decided to start over (while continuing my "main" career) and try things I did not try with the aforementioned "main". Namely the external camera, the IIA, the Mediterranean and (later) the really large submarines.

I started with IIA and the ext. camera (but not to cheat with ). Let me say it's a fun little sub! Patrols are (inevitably) short, as are engagements.

A few pics (click to make larger) from my first patrol:

The crew huddled together on the tiny conning tower - we're a happy family!

The IIA coming through the murky waters - the bow really looks like an alien (a "grey")

Good shot, he spotted us though (I missed). That was the whole patrol, really. Engaging one merchant. It is a welcome change in some ways, although I probably won't be able to take it for too long Med here I come!

Return to Kiel with... not much. Next time, boys! Next time!

Isn't it nice when three sinkings make for a good patrol, and any more is a bonus?

Not to mention that you get plenty of time ashore for the parties...

Completely agree; a ship or two is great if it was a hard-won success. I've had patrols so bad I was glad to have bagged one...in a Type VII!

But I like the Type II a lot.

I 'snuck' into a port in a type IIa.

I say 'snuck' because there where two destroyers who knew i was there. However as many pings they pinged they still could not get a precise fix on me, and all their depth charge runs missed (though some came close i took no damage).

I ended up sinking about 8 tons of merchant and 1.8 tons of warship, all while having those destroyers looking franticaly for me. I then cruised out at 1 knot.

By the time i was safe my crew was almost suffocating, but we go out just fine.

I had a very successful 1939 GWX patrol in a IIA ... five sinkings!

(sunk a PT boat and a sailing sloop with my flak gun, mwahaha )

My usual patrol in U-13 had one sinking.

After cranking up the realism on GWX to 100% (and no map updates) I've left my Type VIIb to start from the beginning with a Type IIa. This means that I can hone my skills without running too far from home and worrying overly about dealing with convoys and escorts. So I'm learning the 100% trade on lone merchants in the North Sea for the time being and hope to transfer to a Type VIIb when I'm reliably sinking again... The Type IIa is a great trainer!

It's always a joy to take those Type II's out for a spin, just for the fun of it! Tiny, cute boats!
