Default Das Boot

Just saw a television commercial for a special showing of Das Boot:the Director's Cut

I missed the timeframe, but it'll be on the evening of June 30th on AMC (American Movie Classics)

Uncanny....I spent yesterday ripping Das Boot: Directors Cut onto my Creative Vision:M...now i can watch it when confined to my tent. Whats more, the new solar panel charger I picked up will allow me to charge it up via a cigarette lighter attachment.

I'm now officially happy....and maybe a bit sad too.

I couldn't care less. No, that's not meant to be an insult either to you or the movie. It's just that I've owned the original theatrical version on VHS for ten years, the Director's Cut on VHS for at least 8 years, the Director's cut on DVD for at least 5 years (except I gave that one to a needy fellow simmer when I bought...) and the Original, Uncut 5-hour version for about 3 years. Until I became homeless I watched that one at least once a month.

So, thanks for the heads-up about it being on TV, but WHY DON'T YOU BUY THE LONG VERSION? :rotfl:

Default Das Boot being sold at the supermarket checkout.

I chanced to find and bought a copy of the director's cut yesterday at the supermarket for $9 (enhanced, remastered). I grabbed it to replace my old VHS of the Das Boot. The original theatrical release has the tightest editing, and the most impact for me. The longer versions drift a bit.

But the longest (5-hour) version follows the book much more closely.

Either way you view it Sailor Steve and 8X15, It's a great all time classic and IMO the all around best sub movie made............

Nope, with the DVD you can watch it dubbed in English or as the majority prefer, in German with English subtitles, the choice is yours.

You just HAVE to watch it in German with English sub titles...there's just no other way. I'd also suggest doing the same with the german Stalingrad movie....which is also top class stuff!

What identifies the 5 hour version from the others? There seems to be at least 3 versions available on Amazon, but none say anything about a 5 hour length (?)

From Amazon.ca, you will see the reference to the "un-cut" version.

A very interesting experience is to watch it in dubbed english, then watch it again with the subtitles.

Its almost like a different movie. The 'point of view' and phrases used are an interesting insight on the culture of that day (60's) [meaning when the movie was made not WWII].

I actually once watched it in dubbed English, with the subtitles on. That's a real experience. You're right, it is almost two different movies.
