Default Great GWX Experience

I have embarked on my first patrol with GWX and no map contacts along with the mod removing the tails. I decided to choose a type VIIB in the med out of Salamis (mainly becuase I don't like to transit large distances)

My first encounter invloved tracking down a merchant sonar contact without any contact lines. It was a nice challenge. I managed to spot a medium cargo ship and take a couple of bearings, but was surprised at the distance in which I was spotted . The merchant started to constant helm, but I was able to get a good bead on the course and speed and managed to get myself up close and personal. It took a few fish (due to a less than perfect solution) but she went down.

Next I went to the south west of the CO block and traveled along a convoy lane. Several reports had been shown along this line. After a while I received a report of a contact heading west and started to set up an intercept course and search pattern. A few hours later I recieved a second report of what looked to be the same contact, so I was able to link these two to get a course for the contact. I placed my self into position and decided to hang out on the surface until I got my first visual. I was met with an unpleasant surprise as I started to get shelled by a DD. Apparently one was traveling along the same track as the expected merchant. I Crash dived and started to try to get some distance and depth before the DD closed the gap.

What happened next was pure enjoyment. Constant sound checks, quick dashes, depth changes, listening through the surround sound for the DD and location of the depth charge explosions. Not daring to come to PD to take a peak. Feelings of elation when the distance was reported as constant or moving away, or when the depth charges could be heard well to the stern. Eventually I was able to escape to the north west.

Having to rely on my ears instead of bearing lines was a nice challenge and certainly added to the tension between hearing depth charges in the water and actual explosions.

My plan is to shadow the merchant until Nightfall and hope the DD takes a different course. Once again good job to the modding crew (GWX + Rubini).

Thanks for letting me share
