After having to restart my career (game started crashing when loading saved games), I started Partol 3 in my spanking new VIIB from Willi. Glad to be out of the Type II, I started my trek around Scapa Flow to a patrol grid South of the Irish Channel.. The first few days were pretty uneventful, picking off a stray merchant or cargo here and there..
Around 0600 on the 4th. day, I picked up a fast moving task force heading my way. I didn't have much time to get into position as a Tribal was heading in my direction. I did a quick scan and found a V&W, J class and C class. Knowing that there had to be a high value target inside the group, I started my quiet approach. Well, not too quiet since the escorts were steaming at 25 kts, I didn't think (hoped) that they would hear me. A quick look through the scope and I could see the Revenge heading for me. I prepped 4 tubes for impact and 5 meters depth. When the Revenge filled my scope, I fired the whole salvo. As soon as the last eel left the tube, I started reloading & getting out of dodge. The Revenge took 3 hits out of 4 fish and started her death roll. Seeing how I broke a cardinal rule of engagement (attacked in 36 meters of water), I reduced speed and snuck out of the escort ring. Luckily they concentrated on where I had been and depth charged that area. I thought about using my stern eel to finish off the battleship, but didn't want to feel the destroyer wrath without having any tubes loaded. By the time I had 3 bow tubes loaded, I was 3 km from the Revenge and the escorts were steaming off. I closed the distance to the Revenge and waited for the escorts to get over the horizon. One more impact shot (now to the bottom of the ship) and I had the 28,000 tons in my log. I surfaced & ran at flank while the external spares were brought into the boat. Good thing I waited for the escorts to leave as they promptly turned around & returned to the debris field that was once their battleship. By then, I was 8 km away and putting distance between us.. Savoring the kill, we continued around Scapa. The occassional target sunk was very anti-climatic after sinking my biggest target yet. Six grids above my patrol grid, I received a convoy report. A quick burst of speed & we were almost in a perfect intercept position. A huge convoy w/ tankers, cargos and merchants were led by a single flower corvette. Rather than let her pass & have to deal with her nagging, we dispached it with a single eel. Next I targeted and sank a T2, T3, C2 and small merchant with my remaining eels. There were some jucier targets (C3's) carring war equipment, but they were still 'neutral'.. I think any ship visibly carring war supplies, traveling within an enemy convoy, should be considered hostile. Regardless ,we surfaced and commenced the 'duck shoot'. I ceased firing long enough to send out a contact report and then resummed the pummeling. An hour later and I was out of rounds, having to expend my star shells into the waterline of a C2 (Didn't work, but made me feel better) Leaving the convoy behind, I decided to skip the extra renown & 'warp' back to base. With just over 92,000 tons of shipping, a knights cross for me and lots of promotions/medals for my crew, we started preparing the boat for another patrol.. |

I couldn't remember what 'F' key for a screen shot so I pressed a bunch of them & kept flipping around to different stations.. I kept about 2 meters below the keel and headed right for the Revenge. I barely scraped past her stern, changed course & put her between me and the escorts. A few times the escorts started pinging near me, so I went silent until the meter turned the good green again. I was just surprised that the escorts left the battleship floating there for me to finish off..
Usually I get all the shortcuts from the community manual pages, but that's gone now.. ![]() |
