VSTEP have launched a preview site for the forthcoming (expected July in the UK & Ger / Sept in US) continuation in the Ship Simulator series, the new features look set to give the title a much more complete feel of ship operations than the 2006 version.

Seems like you still cant sail the world, only harbour areas.

Sometimes it's better to do a small thing well than a big thing badly. I'd rather have ports that actually looked exactly like the real world ports and proper charts than the rather generic ports and charts of the SH series.
Same with Dangerous Waters it would probably be much better if for example it focussed only on a single hotspot like the Persian Gulf and properly moddeled all of the ports, shallows, buoyed channels etc. Unless you have a Microsoft budget, big worlds are not always a good thing, a lot of atmosphere is lost when generalisation is introduced. |

Did you look at the features? "Long-distance trips between harbours (open sea missions)" Might not be the whole world, but it's a start in the right direction.... ![]() "Walkthrough options on all ships" hrm...could that mean walking around in first person? that would be nice....

Wonder why no worldmap? If Ubisoft could do it twice, why not microsoft? (it IS microsoft right?)
Btw, have to add that the world map in SH3 is not quite correct. For example, The Hawaii islands are just there on the map, but I sailed right through the place where Oahu should be, and I could not see any island there.....(what I was doing at Oahu instead of the Central Pacific is another story....)

It's not Microsoft it's a small Dutch company called VStep who also develop proffessional level simulations. They have adopted a Microsoft style packaging which is why every one thinks it's their game.
If it was a MS game it might indeed have the whole world but VStep doesn't quite have a MS budget and Shipsims seem to have be an even smaller niche market than train sims (which MS has already given up on)! Hence with each new version of Ship Sim things will get incrementally better. Walkthroughs are already available for the original game SS2006 via the recently released addon disc (ie the new ships in the addon have that feature). |
