Have any Finnish people (or anyone else for that matter) on Subsim (Dowly...?) seen the movie about the Winter War front called Talvisota? If so, is it worth seeing?

Totally excellent.

Some of the black humor reminded me of Full Metal Jacket. But different.

Its is very good, its not militaristic or anyway propagandist movie. People are scared and cry, like in real life. The battles are very realistic, rare in a war film.. It tells the story of 23th Regiments, 2nd batallion and 4th company, part of the 8th Division, raised from South Ostrobothnia region in Finland. The battles take place in the river Taipale, some of the fiercest fighting in the war took place there. The characters capture very well the Finnish and specially the Southern Ostrobothnian mentality. The dry, black humour is one of them.
You should bookmark this page, http://www.tali-ihantala.fi/ , its a movie coming to theaters in Independence Day. Could be really good, its about the massive battles of 1944 in the Karelian Isthmus and culminating in the Battle of Tali-Ihantala.

Indeed I've seen it. Quite a few times. Excellent film! I'm expecting 'Tali-Ihantala' to fill it's boots, but I'm not sure if any movie without the excellent cast of 'Talvisota' can do it. We'll see... :hmm:

I can't wait to see Talvisota. I just hope I can find it somewhere in the States... Also, is there a trailer for Tali - Ihantala?

There's also an american made documentary about Winter War with some scenes showing the movie with some re-enactments. Very well made documentary!

It's called "Fire & Ice", check it if you find it somewhere.

http://www.ihffilm.com/dvd005.html , there. But it seems the North American version is 70min shorter than the original. Dont know why, but its a shame. No trailer yet, keep the site bookmarked.

"Trailer" to Winter War.

Isnt there two versions of Talvisota? A cinema version and a TV miniseries one? I had the movie on VHS and when they showed it in the telly as a 2 or 3 part miniseries there was some extra content in it. Like where the guy tells bunch of soldier that it is dangerous to keep open fire b/c of the russian aircraft, they ignore the warnings and the next time the soldier goes by the place they are all dead.

Three versions? If so, I would want the most comprehensive. I HOPE the short one isn't the only option for North America -- the movie looks amazing. Reminds me a bit of Stalingrad judging from the trailer.

We have a trailer for Tali-Ihantala, the film opens today for audiences composed of veterans and high-school students. Hope to take my grand father soon, he is a Tali-Ihantala veteran.

Finland has the best beer adverts!

(I can't find the advert I was looking for....there is a man near a lake and a cabin, but I
can't remember the rest. Anyone know it?)

Finland also has the best swear word in the world!

There's one that's pretty old where a guy goes to the lake and gets the Sauna all warmed up and then yells over the lake to his friend something like "Wanna come to sauna!?!?!?! There's plenty of beer too!!" and soon after there's dozens of boats coming towards his shore.
