There's hope.

Quote from MSN.com:

"Chris Levett, the chairman of Cutty Sark Enterprises, said half of the ship’s planking and many historic artifacts had been taken away during the restoration work. He expressed confidence that the vessel could be restored.

“It will be the old ship. The ship has been through many things in its lifetime,” Levett told BBC radio.

“This is going to make us even more determined to get this ship back up and running and keep her as original as possible,” Levett said."

I finished watching Speed Machines on Nat Geo about the Cutty Sark and changed the channel to watch the news when I saw the headline. I hope they get her restored again. Our kids need some history in their lives.

one of the emails they got was from some one who reckoned they could now save the money used to preserve a useless boat and use it for something more worth while!!!

presumably according to that theory, anything more than 10 years old should be scrapped !!!

there are a lot of mondless philistines about. History is the only thing that tells us who and what we are.

We have enough problems with schools teaching the minimum history allowed.

I agree it's terrible that this has happened, but luckily it would seem that a lot of stuff had been removed because of restoration. Also it would seem that her structure is intact.

If it was deliberate, then I hope they catch the w#nkers responsible.

I just saw some footage of the fire on tv...terrible news.
It's just a beauty of a ship, and the sole survivor of an entire class.
