Sorry but advising you to get more ram etc would be a bum steer! I would save up for a complete system or:
new mobo & cpu
new memory
new pcie video card.
If your married you could look at your wife with big soulful eyes, works for me!

My configuration exactly doubles your specs (1,8 Ghz, 1024 MB, 256mb GC) but i still got issues with GWX when running into a large convoy (especially when the firework starts).

It might work but don't expect it to be fluid at all.

I got a 2.8ghz
512 DDR ram
Geforce FX5700LE 256TD

running SH3+GWX on a average FPS of 35
works for me.

I think your CPU is going to be a Bottleneck
and Upgrading...How old is the computer?
if its 4 - 5 years old , then I guess buying a new Computer is the best option if you have money to spend on it.

if you go buy a new system, go to a shop where you can select your own parts for inside the computer as the shop will build it for you , as if you only spend it on a case (with all the parts inside it ofcourse) you can fairly stay under the 1000€ limit for a good machine.

a friend of mine runs sh3 on a 733MHz machine with 512Mb ram and a128meg card and only has framerate problems in big convoys and in ports, otherwise he gets a solid 25-30 fps so you should be fine when out ast sea attacking single merchants etc but you wouldnt exactly be getting the full sh3 experience....

Avoid Vista if you get a new system. Stay with XP for the time being.

Everything will work fine.I have the similar performance system. Some little lagging may occur close to explosions and when moving mouse being on the deck or in external view. But with highest graphics settings.SH3 is hardware-friendly.

Of course if you're not married you'll be able to afford it anyway

If you want to build one yourself, I have a friend that says that prices at newegg.com are hard to beat. I'm a little afraid of building one myself, but it seems the way to go to get a good computer for moderate prices. Plus, recycle as much as you can, like the disk drives, monitor, keyboard, mouse, sound card, sound system, etc.
But you have to be pretty computer savvy to do this, someting I aint.

Its not hard,

you just need the right equipment.
there are manuals online which you can read
they explain step for step how to build your computer

Right on, Hunter. I have a mid-range computer, bought about 3 years ago
geforce 6800ultra
pent 4 3.6GHz
2 gig ram or I forgot maybe 2 mb if 2 gig seems way to much
and am not in the market but its on the distant horizon, I believe there was a link in the sh4 community about this and I'll try and find it.

edit: my bad, it's about tweaking your system...

Doesn't look like there's much to salvage. If you have an ATX case and at least 400watt ps go to TigerDirect.com . Good luck fellow Californian and feel free to pm me if you have any questions.
