Is this the best-out?
I'am wanting to start subsiming. And I'am wanting to know if Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific is the best subsim out right now?
I'am seeking the best subsim and most played online by fellow captains. |

IMHO Silent Hunter III with the GWX mod is the better WW2 subsim compared to SH IV in its present state. More varied sub types, interesting weapons like the FAT and LUT topedoes, much more challenging game play.
Most played online? I really don't know since I was never interested in multiplayer in SHIII or IV. Both are very good games, in the end it boils down to personal preference. |

Personally, at this moment I'd recommend going with SH3 if you've never played a sub sim before. That one has had 4 patches to iron out most of the bugs, and there are some great mods for it that tweak, balance, make more realistic, and otherwise adjust things that you might not agree with. This one has more potential, but it hasn't been out a month yet, so there are still lingering problems.

Welcome
![]() ![]() I am playing SH4 as well now, like the game a lot, yes it is buggy, but I am being optimistic and thinking there are more fixes on the way. Plus there are some great mods for it already. The game has great potential. In the end it is a matter of opinion though, you will find here at subsim everybody's got one, good, bad and yes ugly ![]() RDP |

Depends on your tastes. Modern or WW2? I have only played one modern and that was I688. I do like the WW2 scenerio better. At any rate, if the Atlantic is your thought, SH3 and the addition of the super mod, GWX. You can get SH3 very cheap if you look around and the super mod is free. This mod is one of the best I have seen, period!
SH4 is the PTO WW2 American sub simulation. On the outset the game has some bugs but these are being corrected. I really enjoy the game. Bugs or not, it is a visual experience and quite fun to play. If you do decide on the SH4 sim, look at the required specs closely. It is a very demanding game on the computer. This is the first game I really could not cut a corner to have it run well. All in all, I rate the game highly....even with the few issues it has.

If you want the wonderful atmosphere of WWII subsimming, then the Atlantic based Silent Hunter 3 with the GWX mod is an excellent choice. Silent Hunter 4 is superior in terms of its graphical appearence, and it has more gameplay elements to offer. With additional patches and mods over the coming months, SH4 will be awesome, but for real atmosphere, the U Boat based SH3 GWX would be a wonderful introduction for you.

While there is no denying the magnificence that is GWX, for someone who has never played a subsim before (much less Silent Hunter 3 in its vanilla state) I'm afraid that might be too steep a learning curve. Weren't some of the realism settings "disabled" in that? At least, even with the god's eye map updates on the colors are removed; everything is grey forcing manual identification by you.

At the moment, there is simply no comparison between SHIII with GWX and SHIV in it's present state.
I'll be honest, I am not enjoying SHIV at the moment. Each mission is nervously loaded and nervously played. I am waiting for bugs to appear or some other irritating aspect of the game to raise its head and overall the game is just awkward compared to SHIII. It's like the girlfriend that explodes if you say the wrong thing to her...or say nothing at all. SHIII / GWX on the other hand is fantastic. All that missing is wolfpacks. But I can live with that....or without it. Tony |

As everyone else has suggested, Silent Hunter 3 in patched form with the (free) Grey Wolves mod is currently what most people regard as the best WW2 sub sim. (see SH3 downloads info on this site for more details)
If you prefer modern stuff, either Sub Command (or the more recent tweeked up version of it, Dangerous Waters) is the way to go. Dangerous Waters lets you mess with a several modern US nuclear subs, some Russian ones (including the Akula), as well as a frigate, ASW helicopter and ASW aircraft too (which you can fly). Be warned though, this is no eye-candy charmer, it has adequate graphics (quite nice in places) but concentrates on modern detection and weapon systems, rather than graphics oohs and aaahs. Also note that it is very in depth, so reading the (500-page plus) manual is quite necessary (although that's not as daunting as it sounds, since the 500 pages cover all the platforms and equipment in the sim). Like the Silent Hunter section of Subsim, the Sub Command and Dangerous Waters forums offer a wealth of knowledge for the beginner. There is also a fairly large modding community for DW and SC, although these tend to be things that make it even more technical! If you are not the sort of person who enjoys the kind of patience required for submarine attacks, you might find SC and DW a little boring (however, it does include a nice mission editor, so there are plenty of extra campaigns and scenarios to be found, I even managed to put my house in the game and attack it with cruise missiles). But, as stated, it has not so much a learning curve as a cliff, nevertheless, if you persevere with it (we are talking a few days of practice here at least), there's much enjoyment to be had from it (especially when you fire a supercavitating 250 knot Squall torpedo from your Akula, or launch a cruise missile at a target 120 miles away), and from a technical standpoint on weapons modelling, it really has no equal. So in the end, the choice at the moment for the best is either Dangerous Waters, or SH3 with the GWX mod. SH4 will get there in the end, but expect to wait a year or so, but if eye candy is your priority SH4 is the one for you. In the end, it's whatever floats your boat. |

It’s quickly forgotten on how poor of state Sh3 was on release. The matter of if it was in worse shape than Sh4 is completely debatable. However the bottom line is you are comparing a completely patched product with an additional year and a half of development from members of our community to a new release with an actual development time of about 10 months and that didn’t have the scope that the GWX had. So let’s compare apples to apple (sh3 v1.02 to sh4 v1.02). To the OP, it really depends on which era and what theater interests you. I believe it’s important to pick your first subsim in an area you are interested in. If you are interested more in to modern nuclear submarines I’d recommend Dangerous Waters. WW2 interests you then Sh3 or Sh4 are good choices. Sh3 is set in the Atlantic and as posted above, has been out for over 2 years and is completely patched with a long list of mods. Sh4 is set in the Pacific and was released last month. This puts it still in its patching cycle. Sh4 is still a great game and it’s going thru its “growing pains” as we speak, but Sh3 went thru the same thing many moons ago. |

![]() Your comparing SH4 to SH3 GWX, like comparing apples and oranges. Compare it to stock SH3. SH3 has been out for over two years and many mods later ![]() RDP |
