Default The Med is hell

Every time I have a single contact with a merchant and close in I come across two too three escorts,
for one ship.

This place is worst than the Atlantic and that's saying something.

Steed,

What year are you currently in? I just joined the 29th Flot. at Spezia where it is 12/1941. I am finding a gold mine of single contacts in the CJ74, CJ75 and CJ76 areas...no escorts. At least for a few more months this area is also out of range of Allied aircraft. I have sent 2 C3's and 2 small/coastal merchants to the bottom in just under five days of patroling. This bottle neck in the med is prime...not as good as the straights...but not near as dangerous.

I am curious to know what year and area you are in....is this what I have to look forward too in the near future...if so I better enjoy my current patrol!

Yes, and when you attack it, another mini convoy shows up, going the other way.
Then you have four escorts chasing you

But I love it

Compared to the Atlantic, the Med is a gauntlet. Its narrow, shallow, and stuffed with shipping. You can see now why Doenitz loathed to send any boats there.

I'm currently in the 23rd out of Salimis in Jan '42. Love the place. I enjoy the long east/west runs beteen Valetta and Alexandria full of shipping. The beauty of it is never knowing what you'll get.

So far only on my 3rd GWX Med patrol, I've seen about a dozen different convoy configs from single ships with one escort, to big task forces with carriers and battleships. Seeing lots of Italian DD's and even a few Italian multi BB taskforces.

In my 2nd patrol I scored 3 out of 4 light crusiers in one TF off Malta. The DD's and then aircraft that they called in on my head forced me to make a run for Taranto for repairs before continuing.

This place is the ducks guts mate!

Ha! You part time skippers.

If you want an experience do a Med Career in an IXD2 and then come back and tell us how you fared.

Ooo, while your there key an eye out for one of the best Sea & Air battles I've ever seen in GWX.

Yes STEED, are you there in an IX boat?

I witnessed an confused battle between Italians and Britt's in heavy fog. They sailed straight into each others formations

A little off topic I know.. but I'm still not enjoying these type IX's....

Last time I tried to use one my lass looked over from her coursework confused as to why I was screaming "DIVE YOU F~~"ker, DIVE!" followed by "B@:!!"d Sunderlands."

I'm sure I grew a beard last time while I was waiting for the crash dive...

I have been resupplying from Thalia in the last few patrols. While this has been quite "tonnageable" there is the temptation now to sneek into the Med., and sniff it out. Problem is early-mid `40 there isn't any freindly bases yet. That means having to cruise Gibraltar twice each patrol ..?
