Ungrateful Navy

So in my latest career, after coming back from a 30k ton patrol, I was offered a new sub because of how I had distinguished myself in the past. That's fine, I said, so I took it and got transferred to Pearl Harbor. I go out on my first patrol in my new boat, quite a wild ride, and get about 20k in enemy warships and merchants. After I limp home, I am greeted with multiple medals... and a message saying they were decommissioning my sub and me along with it for poor performance...

Excuse me? I just got this sub, a brand new model I was told, and I just had a helluva patrol which I racked up more tonnage than the closest US ace had in total, not to mention the medals and my previous experience. What happened? Did I do dirty things to the Admirals daughter while in port? I had just started really getting my crew into shape too!

Can anyone explain this (or commiserate?)

Lemme guess. You were offered a Gato class before April of '42, right?

Realism is one thing but it should NEVER trump the FUN factor in any
game. Words of Wisdom to all the devs creating games for profit.

Yep, dead on. I'm sure if I wasn't so woefully ignorant of WWII sub history I would have figured it out... ah well. Live and learn.

Perhaps as well stated as could be. Lets hope ubi will learn from this little problem they can not take end users for granted. Put out a bad game, get bad press. Its just that simple.

........... The first Gato class submarine built was the Drum, which was commissioned on November 1, 1941, the only Gato class submarine to be in service before the attack on Pearl Harbor. She was the first of 73 Gato class subamrines ordered in 1940 in response to the realization that the US would probably become involved in the current war.

What if 'realism' is the 'fun factor' for some people? :hmm:

Here's a more accurate reflection: choice rules! :p

Dead on Elder. Just read up on the Drum last night. To Gato or not to Gato in 41'.....that is the question!

Hah, I got the Drum too. I was working out of the Asiatic fleet in Java and they offered me this new boat. I had a horrible first mission with it, got jumped by aircraft and made unseaworthy before sinking anything. Got back to port and despite my otherwise great record I too was retired "along with my submarine class." Hey, I might have fired me too after that patrol but retiring the Gato class in '42? Hmm.

There's supposed to be an error in one of the files. The Gato is listed in game as available starting in April or June of 1942. If you get one before that and return to port, the game will read that as "your sub is not in production now and therefore will be retired". I think the offering is coming early, but I have no idea what file controls it.

Now that's a REAL! clue...Had exactly this happened to me and I also posted about it. Was even gonna try to extend the "career" as a mod or something, but did not have the time to dig for it yet. But if it is a "bug" well...lets hope for patch 1.3 or...we have to do some more digging

Good man Captain, you certainly know how to 'screw' your way up the promotion ladder. These opportunities are few and far between, and guess what, the Admiral likes you too, so he's put you on permanent shore leave, so you can create a family for him to be proud of. Welcome to the snob-stock.

Think.. if the Admiral didn't like you, you would most certainly be on the next leaky sub out of town, with an impossible task to perform.

Enjoy the staff office

Maybe it is a function of the difficulty level you are playing on?
