Default US Sub's at Tokyo Bay 1945...

A few photo's from the Japanese surrender at Tokyo Bay 1945.

USS Proteus (AS-19)

Names of the submarines present, their commanding officers and the commanding officers of SubRon20 and USS Proteus are printed at the bottom of the image.

Men in the front row are holding Archerfish's battleflag, which features her insignia in its center. The insignia is also painted on the large circular plaque held up below the superstructure railing in the background.

The third Proteus (AS 19) was laid down by the Moore Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., Oakland, Calif., 15 September 1941; launched 12 November 1942; sponsored by Mrs. Charles M. Cooke, Jr.; and commissioned 31 January 1944, Capt. Robert W. Berry in command.

After shakedown off San Diego, she stood out of San Francisco 19 March for Midway to tend submarines of Submarine Squadron 20. She arrived 3 May, and operating there until 1 December completed 51 voyage repairs and 14 refits for submarines. She returned to Pearl Harbor 4 December, and on 5 February got underway for Guam where she completed 4 voyage repairs and 24 refits by 7 August.

Proteus received her new orders and soon rendezvoused with units of the 3rd Fleet and together proceeded on to Sagami Bay in preparatory to entering Tokyo Bay for the final surrender. En route, Proteus dispatched the first prize crew - which was the Japanese Submarine the I400 - at the time the largest submarine in the world. The Proteus became the flagship of a 26 ship support group which steamed off the coast of Honshu until 26 August.

On the 28th she anchored in Sagami Wan to begin supporting Submarine Squadron 20 as it demilitarized submarines, human torpedoes, torpedo carrying boats, and suicide boats at Yokosuka and other locations in the Sagami Wan-Tokyo Bay areas. September and October were spent providing support in two major directions: the supply and repatriation of Prisoners of War; and continuing the demilitarization process. During the formal signing of the surrender documents on the Missouri, Vice Admiral Charles A. Lockwood Jr., the official submarine force representative was quartered aboard Proteus and flew his flag from the I400 - which was still along side.

In case some of you aren't aware, Adm McCain and Commander McCain are the Grandfather and Father of current U.S. Senator, former VietNam POW, and Presidential Candidate John McCain.

FYI :hmm:

I wondered at the connection; too lazy to look it up myself.

Thanks, b1bmsgt.

Thanks woofiedog,
I always knew that my sub (USS Segundo) had been there. That's the first picture I have seen of the event. The Segundo had captured a Japanese sub right at the end, and towed it to Tokyo Bay. Didn't know they had stuck around for the party.....
