Since people are asking about the Wahoo, Tang, Pampanito(sp?), etc. I want to knwo if anyone has seen Fluckey's Barb...she is a Gato class I believe. One of first(if not the first) subs to deploy night time covert ops to destroy a land target(destroyed train tracks) and the first sub launched bombardment of a land installation with missiles(actually unguided rockets). The launch racks were welded to the bow by the crew. She was the grandmother of Boomers and cruise missile armed subs. She also board more than here fair share of Japanese surface vessels...who cares if they were all sampans, fishing trawlers and other assorted small vessels

I got assigned to the Barb a couple of weeks ago in a career, I've been reading and re-reading Fluckey's "Thunder Below!" for the past few weeks, a great book. Not only did her crew destroy the train tracks they took out a train at the same time using detonator switches fabricated for the job by the Barb's crew.
Sadly the Barb no longer exists. She was modified to GUPPY form and sold to the Italian Navy where she served as the "Enrique Tazzoli". She was sold for scrap in 1972. ![]() Last edited by Tarnish_UK; 04-19-07 at 03:53 AM. |
