SH 4 computer system requirements
Hey everyone,
Can you please tell me the system requirements for my computer so that I can play SH 4. I currently have SH 3 running on my notebook which is a Pentium M (R) 1.6 GB with 1 GB RAM and a radeon 9700 pro video. It seems to run fine, except when a convoy is close then it slows down a bit. I dont want to buy SH 4 and then find that I cannot play it. This notebook is due for upgrade, so any suggestions would be helpful. I need a notebook for my work so this is the only computer I have. Thanks Kapitan Gunther |

Silent Hunter 4 System Requirements
ATI® RADEON® 9600/9700/9800, X300 to X850, X1300 to X1800 NVIDIA® GeForce™ 6200/6600/6800/7800 ---- Your video card is supported and you have enough processor speed. The game will run on your computer but it will run very slow because this game is very power hungry, you might be thinking of upgrading. |

Welcome to Subsim, Gunther!
Ubi lists the official system requirements as follows: System requirements OPERATING SYSTEM: Windows® XP/Vista only• PROCESSOR: Pentium®4 2Ghz or AMD Athlon™ (3Ghz Pentium or Athlon recommended) • RAM: 1GB (2GB recommended)• VIDEO CARD DirectX® 9.0 compliant, 128 Mb Video Card capable of rendering Pixel shader 2.0 (256 Mb recommended) - See supported List* • DIRECT X®: DirectX® 9.0 (included on disc) • DVD-ROM DRIVE: 4X or faster • SOUND CARD: DirectX 9.0 compatible • HARD DISK: 6 GB • PERIPHERALS: Mouse, keyboard • MULTIPLAY: Broadband connection with 128 kbps upstream or faster (512 Kbps upstream or faster needed to host online games)Given your current system, I think it may make sense to wait until you can get a new laptop before you pull the trigger on SH4. |

Yea, your computer probably wouldn't handle SHIV all that well. I wish I could say 'upgrade this and you're fine', but really all the key parts you listed are a little sub-par for SHIV. A processor above 3GHz (unless it's dual core), a 256-mb video card and another gig of RAM would really be needed to run it well. Even as a minimum settings, you'd need a processor and video card upgrade.

FWIW, it did NOT run well for me w/ a 3.2Ghz Prescott, 4GB RAM (3.5 effective), and a 6800GT 256MB AGP card.
I upgraded to a C2D 2.4, 4GB RAM, and an 8800GTS 320MB PCIe card and it runs very smooth now. |

Interesting Guys. I just picked up SH4 although my machine is UNDER the minimum for running it. Had the cash to spare for the game - but not the 800 bucks my desired pc upgrade will cost. I figured hey - this will give me a boost on the desire to upgrade. Only problem - sh4 runs fine for me.
I am running a 1.5ghz AMD (XP1800) with 756M Ram on a windows XP box. Sound is onboard (AC '97 based) and video is a Radeon 9800Pro (256M) AGP card. Right outta the box SH4 ran fine. My vid details aren't maxed - and I run at default instead of higher res, but its still danged pretty. The only issues I have are very high time compression actually runs slower than 1024/2048 range, I do get a bit of a slowdown on the map when a convoy is close - and I occasionally get an 1 second pause during the couse of massive explosions (only the death throes - normal explosions of gun or torps cause no delay) - and if I get the pause its only once during the entire conflaguration. Nothing game killing keeping me from running at all. The occasional graphics pause and map slowdown when near convoys at hight TC were present for me in SH3 as well - so I am happy. TC of 1024/2048 was max in SH3 anway for me so the only thing I really seem to be missing is the "quick transit" ability - and instead just transit like I did with SH3. A couple of notes on gaming and PC's - whether desktops or laptops. First thing is processors - stay away from celeron/opteron or the equivilants - the lack of cache on the chip really kills floating point calculations and other things - which games need. A slower speed chip with a decent L2 cache is gonna beat a higher rated clock speed chip with little or no cache. These chips are fine for productivity work - but suck for gaming. Next - memory - while I dont run much - more is better! Especially if you cant tweak the OS some. I am lucky in that I have been able to tweak XP to its bare minimum - unneeded services, processes and threads are gone. This keeps more memory available to the game. Lastly - today's modern systems with games - the bottleneck has moved BACK to the CPU in most cases. With PCIe vid cards, huge front side bus speeds, most of the time any bottleneck occurs at the CPU. This is a paradigm that shifts almost constantly now - as the frontside bus is going to be the next culprit within a few months - but if your going to game - try and make sure you have an idea of the types of games you want to play and build or upgrade appropriately. For the original poster - your going to upgrade one day no matter what - but if you lay out the 50 bucks for SH4 - you will either have a great new game to play - or a great new reason to upgrade! Best of luck and Good Hunting All either way! Captain Haplo |

![]() ![]() I must say those core2duos are sure something! The rated performance on those things is nearly twice my hyper-threaded P4 ![]() That said, I'm pretty happy with mine ![]() |

It depend of what you understand as a smooth play :hmm: . some people are happy with 10 frames per second or less and others consider it as an unplayable.
I think that below 10 is unplayable, and 20 or more the good point for play i have a 2400+ with a 6600 gt 128 ddr3 and 1GB of ram ddr400 and it is on the limit of a specs ,...10-15 frames outside and sometimes less with big convoys, In the control room and map the game is ok, with 15-20 fps. Also it depends of the submarine, weather, ... some hardware can pass the test page but perhaps can only run the game as a slow motion camera, it´s not a realistic test. can run the game ? yes.. can you enjoy the play ?? No. I tried everything for improve the performance, defragment the disk, cfg settings, remove placton and other things, but it always is the same, 10 FPS outside ![]() 3000 or more 2 gb of ram and a recent vid card like 7600 8800 or ati equivalent

OK, that settles it. I'm not getting SH IV 'til the summer, when I'll upgrade my rig drastically.
![]() I'm having a hard time with GWX Lite, can't imagine how SH IV would run, especially after a few excellent GFX mods from the community... ![]()
