Default The sinking of a Supercarrier - Shinano

http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/s...-s/shinano.htm

"Shinano, a 68059-ton aircraft carrier, was converted from a battleship while under construction at Yokosuka, Japan. She was the largest aircraft carrier built prior to the late 1950s."

Excerpt from a book describing the incident:

Maiden voyage i think, not even a day. Of course i could be mistaken.

Intresting reading what happened on board the Shinano. Admitly the story from just the sub's perspective doesnt have the whole story. Six torpedos, 4 hits, ship sank, what 3 hours later?

"Ironically, she was sunk by the U.S. submarine Archerfish before she ever launched a plane, the victim of faulty damage control and her watertight compartmentation not yet being installed"

Yikes!

Amazing story. Read the book about 6-8 years ago and was fascinated. Wasn't really a "maiden" voyage, but was was hoped to be a sneaky transfer to another dock for completion and they were working on the ship during transport. The captain of the carrier even called off the escort DD that was chasing the sub away.
