My game is very slow when I accelerate time beyond around 2k X. It's so slow that it's better to use a slower setting! Is this a bug? Is this related to the Realtek sound problem? Or just the simulation crushing all that CPU simming into smaller chunks my machine can't handle? (I have a very good machine.)

Unless you are near a mass of other models (convoy, task force, harbor with planes/ships, etc.) it's likely that it's just reaching the max your processor can handle. I suppose an onboard sound card can contribute a little; while most of your ship sound effects are off in time compression that high, you still have the music and ambient sound playing. Onboard sound cards rely on the CPU to make a lot of the calculations, which leaves somewhat less power available to run the game.
