China to build 93,000-ton atomic-powered aircraft carrier
Vessel to be on par with latest U.S. carrier, according to data China has been pushing ahead with construction of a mega-sized nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to be completed in 2020, according to a Chinese Communist Party's dossier. Decommissioned Russian antisubmarine carrier Kiev that China bought in 2000. A source close to Chinese military affairs said on March 27 that China has been promoting the construction of a 93,000-ton atomic-powered carrier under a plan titled the "085 Project." The nation also has a plan to build a 48,000-ton non-nuclear-powered carrier under the so-called "089 Project," added the source. [Excerpted from: The Hankyoreh, a progressive newspaper, decisively committed to journalistic freedom, democracy, peaceful coexistence and national reconciliation between South and North Korea.] China sought US sub secrets to conquer Taiwan: US prosecutor Thu Mar 29, 8:55 AM ET LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Prosecutors in the trial of US engineer Chi Mak said Wednesday that secret US submarine technology information he had tried to smuggle to China was to help it take control of Taiwan. Assistant US attorney Greg Staples said the sensitive data on a computer disk Mak tried to provide China through his brother included information on under-development Quiet Electric Drive technology to make submarines silent. [Excerpted: AP on Yahoo] The world sure seems like its going to be a very interesting place within 20 years. |

Well, tell me when they actually start to lay down the carrier, and again when they launch it. China's military budget is not that large and its infrastructure not quite stabilized yet - lots of projects (like the DF-41 project) can get very late.

I wonder what they will do with it once they have it.
Come to think of it, China has the worlds largest army doesn't it? What do they do with that?! [/complete ignorance of far eastern politics]

Do your share, free traders! Double that FDI and technology flow, although I'm not really certain where the problem lies: in that with the new Demoncratic Majority in both Houses, the U.S.A. military budget will be cut to the bone. This will, no doubt, have a major ripple effect throug out what has been resoundedly termed to be a "global economy".
The fact of the matter is that the Chinese can't develop these kinds of technologies on their own, they have developed what they have by spying, stealing, buying or borrowing. If they could do it on their own steam, they would have, but they can't. Nor do they have the same kind of cultural prejudice against stealing like we do. Like Mick Jagger said, they ain't too proud to beg. And I realize if you are a Chinese spy I will be among the first to be rounded up when you all take over! China will prove once again what it and Russia have proven before. The commies are effective at copying a current generation war machine but they have no foresight. The weapons systems they bring on line in 2020 will be 15+ years behind what the U.S. is bringing on line in 2020. A second hand-anecdotaI account tells me about flights in Russian Tupolov's in Viet Nam in the 1990's and they were disasters albeit relatively true copies of 707's. However, Boeing didn't plan for the cockroaches crawling across the interior walls (true) nor did they equip the planes with overpowered engines which made the plane vibrate and give the sensation of an overpowered lawn mower. Thankfully, they made it from Hai Phong to Da Nang; they weren't actually sure about the success of that trip. Nevertheless, and the foregoing notwithstanding, if we play our cards properly, this could be an extremely positive thing for the U.S.A.. The Chinese have an even greater interest than the U.S.A. keeping oil flowing through the Persian Gulf and the ME. Manufacturing is the reason their economy is booming; the present economy is utterly dependent upon the free flow of petroleum to prevent production levels from declining. The U.S.A. depends upon the supply of cheap manufactured goods and China needs unfettered access in that regard to markets in the U.S.A.. So, yes, everybody is dependent upon each other whether they Like it or not. The U.S.A. needs to partner an agreement of common interest with the Chinese government against the islamonuts. Say what you want, but good things are happening in China and I like the idea of having 1.5 billion mooslime hating Chinese on our side. That is even so China backs Pakistan & Iran (both being hotbeds of extremist Islam). While China does have a problem in it's Xingjiang province, it's been deadly ruthless concerning their attempts to crush it. Look, there's no need to be alarmed. With the new Democratic majority in both Houses, the military budget will be cut to the bone. The left has placed the U.S.A. in a very tenuous position. The Democrats previously cut our military budgets so that our military and intelligence gathering suffered, now they're playing politics to the hilt so nothing can be done in a positive manner in halls of either house. As Americans Await Blackouts, Export-Import Bank Finances Nuclear Power for PRC U.S. Funding Nuclear Plant in China By Timothy P. Carney week of May 21, 2001 (as reported by WorldNetDaily) The United States may be facing a national energy crisis - one that will be punctuated by blackouts in California and probably many other states this summer - but across the Pacific Ocean in Shanghai, the Jiangnan Shipyards will be running at full power building warships for the Communist Chinese regime, thanks to funding provided by the U.S. government. The Export-Import Bank of the United States has provided funding to help two U.S. corporations (Westinghouse Electric and Bechtel Power) to help the PRC build the Qinshan nuclear power plant near Shanghai [snip][SOURCE: FreeRepublic (Post #35)] Here is an interesting and optimistic read written by an Ex-CIA aide for Reagan: 2. The PLA has historically been quite useful in propping up the Chinese Communist Party. I believe Most PLA members are also party members. Here is a small bit that explains it better than I can: Quote:

The Rising Sea Dragon in Asia
This site's mission is to document and analyse the rapid growth and modernization of the Red Chinese navy, and put that growth and modernization into perspective in the current geo-political situation as it relates to US vital interests in general, and as it relates particularly to the US Navy. Use the links above to navigate to areas of interest. [NOTE: Pages on this site are very pictorial intensive and will load slowly on any dial-up connection.]: |

VARYAG TRANSFORMATION
INTO AN OPERATIONAL PLAN AIRCRAFT CARRIER It is the author and researcher of the forging web-site's opinion that the Chinese Navy (PLAN) will launch the Varyag in the 2008-2010 time frame and begin trials and training for her use as an operational aircraft carrier with a wing of SU-33 aircraft, perhaps modernized with vectored thrust and strike at sea and ground attack capabilities in addition to its already significant air superiority capabilites. Furthermore, this air wing will be supported by KA-31 AEW helos operating off the carrier in conjunction with other ASW and SAR helicopters. This training will be ongoing for several years as the PLAN gains experience in carrier operations, and will prepare them for the introduction of one or more of their own indigenous carrier later in the 2010 decade, which will include Chinese indigenous navalized aircraft and their own, more capable AEW and EW aircraft. |
