Default SH3 with New Clothes

I've been poking around in all the SH4 files.

There are so many references to Uboat, Flotilla, VII, VIIc, UBoat aces, and more that I can't help but think that the game is just really SH3 with a new map and textures. Sorry, but its so bad, I went back to make sure I was looking at the right directory.

The fact that many of the problems we are reporting are exactly the same as SH3, I think this sim could have come out last year as an ADD-ON to SH3 and not a new sim.

I love the sim, please understand, but its really is just built on top of SH3. Texture files, and more say the same name even....

I don't see anything unusual about making a game on the same engine. If you poke around other titles, including many that are seemingly unrelated, you might be surprised. Likewise, it couldn't be an add-on because a lot of the engine has been updated so it wouldn't run on the same exe (as an add-on normally would).

As for last year... imagine if the devs had even less time to work on it. Oooh boy

If it weren't a separate game, I doubt Ubi would be willing to finance its development at all. It's got far more new content than many separate games out there, so I don't see a problem here either.

Many sequels are merely improvements built on the previous parts. Medieval 2:Total War still has all the Rome:Total war files in it. Anything related to Roman legions is simply 'disabled'.

But I will say this, last night I fired up SH3 just for a memory refresher. I couldn't believe the difference in the graphics. I love the environmental effects and translucent water of SH4. I like the new Torpedo computer too.

Not only will SH4 far exceed SH3, but it will develop and evolve a lot quicker than SH3 did, both for the devs and the modders.

I mean this respectfully to all in general, not any one individual, but we should all start seeing this glass as half full, instead of half empty.

PS: I gotta love a game that names a bug after me.

It is actually pretty rare to find a sequel or an update to any piece of software which is a complete re-write. Why re-invent the wheel? It is clear, however, that the Devs were really pushed for time on SH4 and some of the bugs left in SH3 are still in SH4. We are all hoping that the devs will be allowed to fix those bugs and the new ones.

The similarities are actually a major advantage for the modders. The modding forum here is full of newly released mods already!

My point is all the files astill are full of German Names. So while I'm very aware tha sequels will use the same materials, I man come on guys. I was reading the mod forums and it seems the crew there is saying the same thing. So many files in SH4 aren't even being used. Red Baron 2 was upgraded graphically with an add-on called Red Baron 3D and all it did was load a new EXE so it can and has been done as well.

Also as I stated, I like the sim, I really do, but medals awarded wrong, folders full of German Medals and Uboats, script that does nothing, and graphics of damage outside that isn't what is really going on inside is just new wrapping paper is my point.

Trust me I'm playing it and will continue as its a lot of fun and the eye candy is nice to see. My point is that they didn't even bother cleaning up the garbage from SH3 and included it. I just hope I don't get awarded the Knight Cross with Clusters for sinking a bunch of carriers.

I agree. It's a very good game built upon a foundation of sloppiness.

I could not run this computer that well on my existing computer, but what I did run I liked, I like the attitude in MONOLITH'S post, many are too quick to judge. Patched I think this game will be up to snuff, may not fix everything yes, but it will be much different than it is now. Modders as they have in the past, will further add to it in a big way

Patience me boys..

I know the patience is exhausted, you have SH4 now in your custody, just give it MORE time, once all the patches are out and the mod crews start doing their share it will all be different just like with SH3 GWX .

If those files are still there and relatively intact, it MAY be possible to take the data files from SH3, and with a bit of clever tweaking, get them to run in SH4. So a merged Atlantic / Pacific game could be possible.

If the engine is essentially the same and the scripting functions are still intact, ya never know. So it could be a good thing.
