As long as it flys a British, Polish or French flag it's OK

If you're talking about the liner anchored at one of the German bases, you'll lose renown because she's a neutral, registered to the U.S. which hasn't entered the war yet.

The game doesn't distinguish between types of ship; enemy liners are always okay.

Personally I try to follow the different orders as they come out; it helps make for more realistic tonnage scores. But that's just me.

Historically you would not want to sink a British passenger ship in the first 1 or 2 months of war as Hitler was still seeking a deal with England and wished to avoid causing England embarrassment.
U-Boats where orders not to sink several types of ship, including battleships. I don't know for sure, but I would guess Liners where on the "don't sink" list too.

The game will let you sink it if war has broken out.

Directive No.5 30th September 1939
States - Attacks on passenger ships or large ships which obviously carry considerable numbers of passengers in addition to cargo are still forbidden.

Directive No.7 18th October 1939
States - The Navy may attack passenger ships in convoy or proceeding without lights.

Where? Wilhelmshaven
What mod? No supermods...stock with eyecandy addons such as Harbor Traffic, Torpedo Damage, Beery Water, Winter Terrain Textures, etc.
Time and Date? Look at the clock in the lower right side. September, 1939

It's flying an American Flag and is identified as a Neutral, making it possible for it to be anchored at Wilhelmshaven, which is currently in the hands of the Germans.

Default Cheers for all the responses

I'm playing GWX 1.02, and the passenger/ cargo ship was spotted 100 miles or so NW of Lerwick sub base.

As there weren't significant numbers of passengers present I first confirmed it was a british ship and then lined up my shot. Let rip with 2 fish (both hits) and then surfaced to finish her off with my deck gun (type IX). I guess I could have just used the deck gun and saved torpedoes... The deck gun broke the ship in half...

On the same patrol I earlier spotted the Nelson and Rodney with a destroyer escort of the coast of Norway at night. I went to periscope depth, but couldn't gain any ground. I fired a spread of torpedoes at very long range but scored no hits so I eventually let them go. I think now I should have got closer on the surface maybe? Any thoughts?
